" Comrades in Arms possesses some of the same edgy irony and cinematic storytelling that made PTU so enthralling, but its spirit is closer to Johnnie To's reverent Lifeline than his award-winning deconstructionist crime thrillers. Comrades is the age-old story of a dysfunctional group who, when the chips are down, learn to put aside their differences and act as a team. That theme lends itself to corny sentiments, and some dialogue certainly comes off that way. Many characters are just types, and the ultimate pro-police feelings may turn off viewers who have a thing against the Man. Also, the setting is unusual; Comrades takes place almost entirely in the day in a remote mountainous area - a far cry from the stark urban noir atmosphere of PTU. The narrative features fewer distinct set pieces, with much of the action feeling familiar if not repetitive. Reportedly, the filmmakers were limited to a low budget, and sometimes it clearly shows.

At the same time, it's impressive that the filmmakers could get so much with so little. For a low-budget Hong Kong film, Comrades in Arms is exemplary. This is less a cat-and-mouse crime film than a wandering-about-in-the-dark one; the cops and criminals ultimately criss-cross all over the mountain, splitting up and running into friend and foe alike as they stumble deeper into the mountains and closer to their individual lessons or realizations. What they learn is rather rote - the themes encompass teamwork, camaraderie, bravery and even religion - but the discoveries are made through wordless action rather than rah-rah speeches. The film chooses not to tell us the obvious and finds growth and emotions within the characters and their situations.

The final shootout is less spectacular than Milkway aficionados are likely used to, but it possesses realistic staging and a positive spirit that is ultimately easy to appreciate. Law Wing-Cheong balances his elements confidently, mixing in ironic humor, smart character details, and recognizable human emotions into his cop-and-criminal saga. This is a lesser Milkyway crime film, but a more-than-adequate successor to the award-winning original that seems right at home among the company's other genre efforts. To many, Milkyway Image is known for more than just genre; their brand means quality too, and Comrades in Arms earns its inclusion in the Milkyway filmography. (Kozo 2009) "

No Mercy For The Rude

SYNOPSIS:
“Killer” grew up in an orphanage, teased incessantly because of a speech impediment. The taunts that he had to endure as a child became bad enough that he simply stopped taking altogether. The only good memories he has of his childhood days, was of another orphan girl that took care of him and treated him like a normal person. She pushed him to stand up for himself and they soon became best of friends.

As an adult, Killer worked at a neighborhood restaurant making use of his best talent: his mastery of the knife. While spending his days working at the restaurant, he decided to see if he could get his speech impediment fixed. The doctor that he saw told him that his tongue was abnormally short and to fix his problem would require a specialist. He told Killer that the price of the operation would cost $100,000.

In order to get the money for his surgery, Killer decides to make use of his talent with the knife and become a killer for hire. His one rule would be that he would kill only rude people. Driven by his desire speak normally, he has nearly acquired the $100,000 and with one last job, he would be able to pay for his surgery. Unfortunately the last job involves a hit on the one person he needs to get his operation and to complicate matters further, the person that is paying for the hit is someone he is intimately close with.

" “No Mercy for the Rude” has already caused a stir as a result of having been bought up by the Weinsteins for release in the West, a fact which although by no means guarantees that the film will actually see the light of day any time soon, at least marks it as a possible ‘next big thing’ for fans of Asian cinema. The film is the first from Park Chul Hee, who had previously worked with other directors such as Lee Jang Ho and Jang Sun Woo, and had written the ghost thriller “Face”. “No Mercy for the Rude” is an assured and confident debut, and clearly indicates that Park is a talent to watch.

The plot revolves around the oddly, yet aptly named Killa (Shin Ha Kyun, “Save the Green Planet!”), a hitman whose tongue is too short, a disability which has left him too embarrassed to speak, and who is knocking off targets with a knife to the heart in order to save up money for an operation. Deciding only to kill the titular rude of society (i.e. those who deserve it), Killa gradually draws closer to his goal, though finds his relatively peaceful existence shattered by his involvement with bar girl She (Yoon Ji Hye) and a young boy who falls into his care by default. After a botched killing sees him hunted by vicious gangsters, and with the police sniffing around his trail, Killa desperately tries to keep his eyes on the prize as his life spirals violently out of control.

From the start, “No Mercy for the Rude” recalls Park Chan Wook’s “Oldboy”, with director Park showing the same eye for quirky details and using a similar voice-over style. However, although the two films are likely to be compared, and certainly share the same nihilistic tone, “No Mercy for the Rude” is less of a cinematic puzzle, and more of an eccentric character study, and is if anything even more cynical in its view of the world than the other film.

As well as exposing hypocrisy in a variety of forms, with all of Killa’s victims being outwardly respectable but morally monstrous people, Park also explores issues of self image and self worth in interesting fashion through the ways in which the various assassins see themselves and justify their actions. This adds a welcome layer of depth, and the viewer warms to Killa as Park gradually fleshes him out beyond the expected ironic quips of his narration, with aspects which seem initially like gimmicks, such as his seeing himself variously as a bullfighter, swordsman and surgeon, quickly taking on a more telling, and indeed tragic air. As such, although the narrative itself is relatively predictable, with a happy or conventional ending never really being in the cards, the film works well as an unconventional character study, and effectively transcends the expectations of the genre.

As well as being filled with bloody violence and surprisingly explicit sex, “No Mercy for the Rude” is actually very funny, with Park managing to achieve a perfect balance of dark humour. Much of this is drawn from a great sense of the absurd, especially in terms of the bizarre yet cosy domestic situation in which Killa is forced into and in the eccentric personalities which populate the film, such as his ballet dancing best friend, who uses his skills to turn his killings into graceful works of art.

Thankfully, as with Killa himself, all of the characters are well written, and all act as far more than wacky stereotypes included for off-kilter effect, with each being given their own sad backstory and motivation. This helps further to provide an effective emotional core, making the film poignant in a way which gradually creeps up on the viewer and which almost belies its brash, coolly amoral exterior.

Whilst Park’s direction is impressive, being controlled and fast moving, it is arguably this melancholy and vaguely poetic heart which is the film’s greatest strength, and which elevates it from being yet another flashy attempt to replicate the success of “Oldboy”. Providing both style and substance, “No Mercy for the Rude” engages on many levels, and emerges as one of the best Korean films of the last few years, and if unlikely to achieve the same international acclaim or high profile of Park Chan Wook’s classic, at least deserves to find its niche with fans. "

Good Will Evil

SYNOPSIS:
A rising politician can’t raise a family because his nightmare-prone wife won’t agree; eventually they agree to adopt because it will benefit his career, but the strange child they pick from an orphanage has a thing for dismembering dolls and other sinister behavior. Like most horror flicks with disturbed children and flawed adults, there’s a horrible secret awaiting to surface.

" Feeling like a late 90's Hong Kong horror, Good Will
Evil is pretty much an incoherent mess for the first
twenty minutes. Everything adds up in the end though
but getting the viewer interested is something this
movie fails at. Once we get past the 20 minute mark
the real movie begins. A troubled couple decides to
adopt orphaned girl Shaw-Tian. Shaw-Tian only has one
item in her possession which she holds very dearly - an
ugly-looking clown doll. It doesn't take long before
the doll start to make creepy things happen around
Shaw-Tian. We really have a lot going on in Good Will
Evil. An evil doll with glowing green eyes, the ability
to move from one place to another in one second, and
with evil yarn growing out of its neck. Evil yarn people.
This time we don't get a red ball slowly bouncing down
the stairs, this time we get red yarn. Creepy red yarn.

Seriously, who came up with this idea? Demonic yarn?!
For crying out loud people. We also have an old woman
who has premonitions every time she has hiccups,
a slimy green ghost-boy and naturally the new mother
of Shaw-Tian was raped and abused as a child to top
it all off. It's all a bit much to swallow if you ask
me. This is cheesy horror at its best though because
no matter how campy Good Will Evil may be, it's pretty
entertaining. More so than most recent Asian horror
flicks. Since there's always something going on you're
never bored and that's something I don't take for granted
with Chinese and Taiwanese horror films.

I will give them kudos for the effort because Good Will
Evil (don't even get me started on the title) is good
fun but it's not a movie to be taken seriously... at all.
It's no wonder that the movie flopped because it really
does feel like something we could expect to get from
Hong Kong a couple of years ago (which is not a good
thing). Don't waste too much time tracking this one down
but if it's on TV, I'd give it a go if campy ghost
stories are your thing.

Good Will Evil is almost so bad that it's good and it
certainly is cheesy fun. I'm probably being way too
nice on it but it just brings me back to when I started
reviewing horror films. It's a terrible movie but it
is amusing. Only for hardcore fans of Asian horrors. "

SYNOPSIS:
In the series, Nicholas Tse, playing SanYe DaZhong, has great martial arts with a kind heart, but because of the orders of his master before his death, he went alone to search for a worthy sword. Being injured on his way, he received the caring of Chu Yee (Gillian Chung). To protect Chu Yee (Gillian), DaZhong(Nicholas) accidentally killed Lee Zi Yuen. From their time together, a romance was born. However, because his master had told him not to reveal any of his feelings, the two of them have been left in the guessing stage. From the battle in Bak Wan Goon, Chu Yee (Gillian) had been hypnotized by her father, causing her to point a sword at DaZhong(Nicholas). Being devastated, Chu Yee(Gillian) has decided, in order to not hurt her loved one anymore, to leave. Perhaps it is fate, the two of them met up at a nunnery a while later. To let Chu Yee(Gillian) have a happy live, DaZhong(Nicholas) has decided to set everything down temporarily. Unfortunately, things worked out to be against what was wished for. He doesn’t want to be near her but somehow he happens to talk with her all the time, which makes him confused. They unexpectedly run into a kidnapping case and she is getting sure about his supernatural power. Hyun-jin tags after him, and tries him in many different ways to figure out his gift. He thinks she is so annoying and frustrating; however he finds strangely himself feeling something about her. As he is entangled in Hyun-jin’s test, he ends up cleaning a restaurant to cover for expensive lobster dishes. Later on Su-min and Hyun-jin go to an amusement park with the money from Su-min’s cleaning work and surely she never stops testing him even at the park. Since they see the kidnapping suspect by chance at the park, they get a step closer to real state of the kidnapping…

After ten years behind the bars in Taiwan, Kong Sai-Hao (Michael Miu) finally returns to Hong Kong. On one hand, he pretends to surrender to triad boss To Yik-Tin (Lam Lee), the man who caused him to be jailed. Pak-Kiu refuses to have a criminal as his friend, but Lap-Man becomes an undercover police in Sai-Hao's gang. Along with Sai-Hao, they overrule Yik-Tin and take over the mafia, and the two develop a misconcepted mentor-student relationship. Unfortunately, Lap-Man gets fired from the police force before he can finish his mission in the mafia. He becomes Sai-Hao's people and turns his back against the police force....

Yik-Tin keeps a close watch on Sai-Hao but purposely shows that he trusts Laughing (Michael Tse) more and intentionally puts him in a high position, but Sai-Hao uses Yik-Tin's wife Ching Yeuk-Sam (Kathy Chow) in the organization as an influence to help Sai-Hao up the ranks. But when he thought that he was in control, his drug dealing business failed and Sai-Hao discovers that the people he trusted the most betrayed, tricked and used him....

Bitter over an unforeseen defeat to rival states Shu and Wu, Cao Cao (Fengyi Zhang) of the Wei Kingdom is confident that his million-man fleet will crush the under-manned alliance once and for all.

An epidemic and seasickness cripple Cao Cao's men, however, postponing D-day. Gen. Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) take the time to demoralize their enemy, and trick Cao Cao into practically giving them 100,000 arrows and even beheading his top generals.

Nevertheless, the allies are still seriously outnumbered and can only increase their chances of winning by attacking with fire. A northwester, however, compromises their plan, as the flames would blow back in their direction. Zhuge Liang, foreseeing an astronomical movement that will change the circumstances, urges the allies to postpone the attack. Meanwhile, Xiao Qiao (Chiling Lin), Zhou Yu's beautiful wife whom Cao Cao lusts after, heads to the enemy line with a plan of her own.

" After a rather helpful and stylishly executed recap of the events of part one, we are thrown immediately back into the thick of the action, or rather, into the middle of a game of football. Cao Cao’s troops are killing time with a little competitive Cuju as they wait for the real battle of Red Cliff to kick off. While Sun Quan (Chang Chen) and his coalition forces formulate their plan of action across the bay, his sister, the plucky Shang Xiang (Zhao Wei) is seen masquerading as an enemy soldier, intermittently sending updates to Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) via carrier pigeon of the state of the enemy’s superior forces. And the news is encouraging. A typhoid epidemic is sweeping through the camp yielding heavy casualties. While some of the allied generals see this as an opportune moment to strike, noble Zhou Yu (Tony Leung) sees this as a dishonourable tactic. It is not beneath Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) to use this viral outbreak to his advantage and loads his infected dead onto rafts and sends them over to his enemies’ camp. This act of germ warfare has a crippling effect on the already far weaker coalition, and causes a number of the generals to pull their troops out and head for home.

Both sides are drawn into a tactical battle of wits, reluctant to mount a full scale assault while their forces are so ravaged by illness. Cao Cao sends an old student friend of Zhou Yu’s, to persuade him into surrendering. His wife Xiao Qiao (Lin Chi Ling) meanwhile, believes her perfected tea ceremony skills may have diplomatic skills and is prepared to go to unparalleled lengths to prove her point. Zhou Yu is only too aware of Cao Cao’s reputation for wooing his enemies’ wives and has no intention of letting Xiao Qiao out of his sight. Zhuge, meanwhile, applies his tactical expertise and almost godlike understanding of meteorology to not only sap vital ammunition from the Han troops, but also facilitate a devious plot to spread paranoia and distrust through the enemy camp.

To say that John Woo has delivered on the promise of Red Cliff part one is to understate the obvious. This second half is a master class in ratcheting up tension, before unleashing a furious fireball of a finale. The battle sequences are expertly handled, showcasing an epic spectacle, while remembering to hone in on the plethora of individuals Woo has spent the last 4+ hours establishing. Everyone is given their moment in the sun, from Nakamura Shido’s grenade testing to Zhao Wei’s, quite literal, big reveal.

There are moments of exuberant bombast which verge on the ridiculous – a stirring speech by Cao Cao seemingly curing typhoid for one – but fans of John Woo will find many of his usual signature themes and devices in attendance. An abundance of white doves throughout, borderline homoerotic declarations of loyalty, brotherhood and mutual admiration (Takeshi and Tony even get to reprise their guzheng duet) and a climactic five-way standoff that would make Tarantino go weak at the knees.

Zhang Fengyi makes Cao Cao a complex and charismatic villain, more than simply a power-hungry politician whose motives can be easily swept aside. Takeshi Kaneshiro is in his element, wrapping his silken tongue around Zhuge’s poetic musings and meditations, and Tony Leung is dependable as ever as the unflappable Zhou Yu. The real revelation in part two is Lin Chi-Ling, who easily eschews those early fears that she may not be robust enough to carry the part of Xiao Qiao – the trophy wife with a lot more gumption than her mantra of “make tea not war” conveys.

Sadly, Chang Chen is again criminally underused, arguably given even less to do this time round than in part one, but the film’s biggest crime is the sidelining of Hu Jun as Zhao Yun. Admittedly his character is “injured” for much of this second half, but the image of him in battle, baby wrapped tightly to his back in a wonderful homage to Hard Boiled, remains one of Red Cliff’s enduring images. He manages to briefly claw his way on screen during the big finale but it was shame after his iconic role in the preceding film.

The criticisms, however, are far outweighed by the praise. Red Cliff achieves where other recent Chinese epics have failed – less melodramatic than The Warlords, more exciting than Battle of Wits - staging grandiose battle sequences that are coherent and genuinely exciting while simultaneously developing numerous characters beyond simply their job description. John Woo should have his passport confiscated immediately and never be allowed to leave Hong Kong again, Red Cliff is undeniable proof that the man can still rock our world, but really should work from home. "

She is told by doctor Terasawa Daisuke (Osawa Takao) that her mother has terminal cancer. Although Sakiko does not feel comfortable to be with Tatsuko, she nurses her mother in the hospital every day. Encouraged by Terasawa, Sakiko found out a secret concealed by her dying mother for many years...

" Bizan is the latest film from director Isshin Inudou, starring Nanako Matsushima, known for her leading role in The Ring, and established actress Nobuko Miyamoto.

The entire theatre was wracked with sobs near the end of the movie, including the two guys sitting in front of me. That must've been an awkward conversation when the house lights came up:

Guy 1: Whoa, dude, I ... got something in my eye.
Guy 2: (sniff) Yeah.. yeah... it must be dusty in here or something...
Guy 1: (sob) dusty...

From the story description, you might be inclined to pass this movie up... after all, the whole 'parent-with-a-terminal-illne ss' plot has been repeated ad nauseum (for me, it's most similar to one of my favourite Canadian films, Les Invasions Barbares, concerning a very similar story).

But why shouldn't it? Does the fact that you've seen the story before, does that make the idea of your parents dying any less sorrowful?

No... additionally, director Inudou creates a wonderfully nostalgic picture of Japan, centering on a town called Tokushima, on Shikoku. The town is famous for its annual Awa Dance Festival, which is the focal point for the mother and daughter, as the mother would like to see the dancers 'for the last time'.

Fun fact: The Awa Dance originated in 1587, when a drunken celebration inspired the locals to stumble around, while other drunkards played musical instruments and made up a song. What a way to celebrate!

Everything is shot so crisply, with Inudou combining the static framing and aesthetics of traditional Japanese paintings and the slow-moving, long takes of European cinema. He controls the camera with ease, letting the scene rest on the two actresses.

Fun Fact: Nanako Matsushima was a popular model, modelling the ugliest swimsuits that I've ever seen. You can take a look.

The pair of them are absolutely incredible - two of Japan's biggest names at the moment, Matsushima coming off the success of her modeling career and The Ring. However, for me, the mother, played by Miyamoto, steals the entire show, then buries it deep, close to the molten core of the Earth.

What a performance! Effortlessly controlling people with the slightest word or gesture... in one scene, she chastises a nurse and doctor by apologizing and bowing. It's a masterstroke, Miyamoto acting as a lady that holds to the traditional Japanese idea of a woman.

The relationship between the daughter and mother is a cold one, so much so that the daughter feels unwanted and unloved. The truth, as we expect, is quite the opposite: the daughter is the sole reason for the mother's existence, and she only wants her daughter to grow up to be a strong, traditional Japanese woman.

From the beginning of the film, you'll recognize that this movie is something special, just from the quality of the filmmaking. As it moves on, though, you'll struggle to maintain composure as the story gets more emotional, winding down to the inevitable conclusion. What's left, though, when you leave the cinema, is a tremendous feeling of renewal and invigoration; Inudou's Bizan is an event, minimally flawed, but truly genuine in spirit.

I say: A superb film from Japan, one that'll make you crave to see the island for yourself, and one that'll break your heart. Will you see it in the theatre? Unlikely in Sydney, so you'd better track it down on DVD. A few easily forgettable flaws: unnecessary narration, slow motion scenes.

See it for: The dancers from the festival are incredible. Inudou captured the vitality and enthusiasm of an unknown (to me) celebration. Vivid and unforgettable. "
