SYNOPSIS:
During the time Hong Kong was under British rule, there was a dark age when corruption and bribery were the order of the day. At that time the head of this empire of graft is Lak, the Chinese Chief constable. Whenever he fails to apprehend a fellow, his subordinate Unicorn (Eason) under his wings. Due to a personal conflict Lak and Unicorn went their separate ways. Then in the early 1970s, the Governor of Hong Kong decided to clean up the police force and an operation branch ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption) was set-up headed by Yim (Bowie). To avenge their humiliation, both Unicorn and Bong joins ICAC to crush Lak and the gang.

REVIEW:
" Spanning roughly a decade with three parallel plot threads, Wong Jing’s latest opus I Corrupt All Cops is undoubtedly his most ambitious films in years. However, considering the schlock master’s recent track record, it doesn’t take much to make an ambitious Wong Jing movie. Still, we should be appreciative of what Wong has to work with this time around – an intriguing historical background as well as an impressive cast that includes Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, and Eason Chan. The cast also includes Wong favorite Meng Yao and pop star Alex Fong Lik-Sun, but we won’t count that against him...

...Despite the film’s implied and certainly Chinese investors-targeted message – that Hong Kong is no longer corrupt, especially under Chinese rule – I Corrupt All Cops is undoubtedly a Hong Kong film. Filled with dirty cops doing their worst and even a scene where someone gets a hammer to the face, Wong Jing certainly doesn’t show much restraint (within the IIB guidelines, of course) in showing the grim world of seventies Hong Kong police corruption. With a sprawling plot that nicely utilizes its large ensemble cast (even Meng Yao puts in some effort by speaking Cantonese) and a whole lot of story to cover, the film is always on its toes and is fairly compelling cinema.

However, Wong tries to put too many eggs into one basket, spending too much time developing the film’s criminal elements when the heart of the film should be their antagonistic relationship with the ICAC. Even though the more important characters are evenly developed as a result of the film’s two halves structure, there are some plotlines – especially Gale’s relationship with the unusually kind Wife no. 4 (Kate Tsui) and his affair with drug dealer Rose (Liu Yang) – that feel like character development for the sake of character development. The gray-shaded Gale is potentially the most interesting character and his relationship with Lak is one worth caring about. However, the film frustrates by constantly cutting to his chaotic marital life and his improbable romantic relationships instead of focusing on more interesting content.

The ICAC section of the story, especially how it developed its infamous interrogation techniques and how it helped bring down the bad guys, is captivating while it lasts. However, the ICAC's origins feel overly simplified and seem to boil down to the success of about six people. Wong does go to great lengths to show the torment of the ICAC agents (including an unnecessarily lengthy monologue about how the bad guys killed a dog), but it doesn’t go nearly as deep into the organization’s roots, methods, and its agents’ psychology as it should have. Instead, the ICAC is portrayed as an idealistic and cool force for good. Worse yet, the simply skims over the boiling point of the ICAC-police feud with a montage and a voiceover at the end. For a film that spent so much effort on the ICAC wordplay in its title, its simplification of the organization is certainly underwhelming.

Nevertheless, it’s been a while since Hong Kong has seen such an ambitious local film, which earns some automatic goodwill for I Corrupt All Cops. It's perhaps Wong Jing's finest work since The Colour of the Truth, but it doesn’t quite deliver on its potential. Even with a solid cast (especially Bowie Lam’s righteous inspector and Eason Chan’s morally conflicted cop) and plenty of historical material to draw from, Wong’s attempt to cover all sides of the story results in a muddled focus. I Corrupt All Cops is an undeniably entertaining and even sometimes involving film, but those who actually expect a quality film may be a little disappointed. On the other hand, those expecting a Wong Jing film, especially those that know a good serious Wong Jing film is as rare as a Wong Kar-Wai one, will be pleasantly surprised. It may be too late to stop Wong Jing from going back to his usual crude antics, but I Corrupt All Cops still earns more respect and deserves more support than it suggests. (Kevin Ma, 2009) "

Sophie's Revenge

Genre: Comedy, Romance
Starring: Ziyi Zhang, Bingbing Fan, Ruby Lin, Jisub So, Peter Ho
Release year: 2009
Language: Mandarin
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Feisty cartoonist Sophie (Zhang Ziyi) is heartbroken when her perfect fiance, Jeff (So Ji-sub), leaves her for another woman ― not just any woman but the glamorous movie star, Anna. She meets a photographer, Gorden (Peter Ho), who is apparently Anna’s ex, and persuades him to be her accomplice in undertaking the perfect revenge.

RATING: 7.75/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" ... Co-financed by Beijing Perfect World and Korean powerhouse CJ Entertainment, as well as an investment from Zhang herself, SOPHIE'S REVENGE greatly benefits from its impressive production values. CGI is used to excellent effect here, animating Sophie's emotional disposition and fantastical take on life, using everything from a plague of animated, soul-sucking bugs, to literally tearing the film down around her, in order to show her inner turmoil and hyper-active imagination. Beijing is painted in bright primary colours as a glossy, economically booming playground, with nary a hutong or hawker in sight, populated solely by glamorous, successful urban achievers, clad from top to toe in designer clothing. The wintry setting offers Zhang the perfect opportunity to showcase a huge wardrobe of woolly hats, mittens and various arctic ensembles, which perfectly compliment her character's oddball behaviour and quirky disposition.

Not that she needs such props, however, as Zhang here proves herself to be a more than competent comic actress. In fact, she knocks the role out of the park, making Sophie totally adorable, when she could so easily have been an irksome crackpot. It's an impressive central performance from an actress new to comedy, but displaying seemingly limitless range. Sophie is frequently seen hiding behind sofas, clinging from window ledges, yet never loses her charm - even when, in one particularly amusing scene at the gym, she is wearing the ugliest shell suit known to man. The supporting cast do a fine job. Fan Bing Bing in particular makes a worthy adversary to Sophie's scheming. So Ji Sub - speaking what did not appear to be dubbed Mandarin - is suitably superficial, while Peter Ho let's his hair do most of his acting for him.

The story is nothing new and those familiar with Korean comedies - or who have ever seen an episode of Ally McBeal - will have seen this quasi-animated approach to comedy storytelling before, but for a mainland production, and as a commercial vehicle for its star, SOPHIE'S REVENGE works really rather well. It does run out of steam a little bit in the final act and probably runs about 10 minutes longer than necessary, but for Zhang Ziyi's performance alone, this is well worth checking out. "

Wei Gan … So-ching
Ronald Cheng … Kong

SYNOPSIS:
Set in the future, this is the story of K-1, a national secret, as it is the first cybernetic organism programmed with social conscience created by the Chinese government. To test K-1's sophisticated identity, he is sent to a remote village as a newcomer. Unaware of his true nature, the villagers come to care for him. Then an unbelievable confrontation turns everything around when another cyborg, K-88, disappears and goes on a rampage. K-1, together with a local cop, are sent to hunt down the malfunctioning K-88.

RATING: 6.5/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" It becomes very clear very quickly that “Kung Fu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction” is not taking the expected route, and that its odd, convoluted title is a pretty accurate reflection of its wacky content. Despite its potentially action packed premise of a robot joining the police, after some bizarre initial exposition, it throws the viewer straight into a vaguely inappropriate love triangle between K-1, Su Mei and Dachun, without so much as a hint of character back story or motivation. Just as the viewer is settling into this rather odd plot direction, after around an hour or so, out of nowhere the film suddenly explodes into transformation sequences and robot fighting. The CGI effects are actually quite good, and although the bombastic set pieces are still played partly for gags, the choreography by action director Yuen Tak (who worked on such classics as “Fong Sai Yuk” and “Swordsman II”) is solid, and they work well enough to inject some thrills and excitement and proceedings.

Unsurprisingly, Lau directs with his usual scattershot style, and the film is characterised by its oddball tonal shifts, leaping from eccentric romance to action and comedy, and, even more unbelievably, to straight drama which sees him trying to comment on the nature of love and what it means to be alive. This is perhaps only to be expected from Lau’s everything but the kitchen sink brand of film making, and although the film is pretty incomprehensible at times, it is arguably all the more fun and enjoyable for it.

The final act in particular comes with some very leftfield plot developments and an effects heavy cyber rumble that is admirably far out, even by his standards, before capping things off with some entirely undeserved tugs at the heart strings and an amusingly rushed mock-philosophical message. This does make for some very wacky viewing, and whether intentional or not, the comedy is generally funny, if a touch mean spirited at times as Dachun tries his best to undermine K-1. There are a good few surreal jokes, with the robot’s head turning into a tin opener, a can of sardines, and finally a giant ass – all very low brow, but humorous enough.

As such, for all its being mooted as a Chinese version of “Transformers”, “Kung Fu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction” is basically a Jeffrey Lau film with a bigger budget than usual and an even wilder, looser sense of creativity. This is arguably in its favour, as it delivers something unpredictable and pleasingly different to the norm, and the film is entertaining and lively, particularly for those viewers who don’t require too much in the way of logic or sense. "

Eventually, Kim gets a call about a deadly oncoming wave, with only ten minutes to spare! RATING: 9/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" This is the premise of South Korea’s first major disaster movie ever. This movie is pegged as being a disaster, drama, comedy, and romance all rolled into one; making it very difficult to actually put into one definite genre. Like many South Korean films, this one tries to bust through genres and in doing so, while being a bit confusing for audiences, ends up standing as something very unique when compared to Hollywood. Haeundae is no different; this movie moves through the interactions of its characters, romances, and squabbles with the backdrop of an impending disaster that only the main character knows about and no one believes him until it is almost too late to do anything about it.

While hardly an original script, especially to westerners who are bombarded with disaster movies at least several times a year, Haeundae is well worth watching because of the director’s effortless ability to weave in comedy, drama, and romance without the movie turning hackneyed or overdone.

The movie is directed by Je-gyun who is already a popular name in cinema and has done a number of romances, comedies, and dramas already. He brings together a starry cast as well, including Sol Kyung-gu who plays Choi Man-shik, the main character who, after losing his best friend to a tsunami retires from the sea for good. He settles down to own a shop on the Haeundae beach. He is supported by Ha Ji-won as Kang Yeon-hee who upon being rescued by his brother Hyung Silk (Kang Ye-won) turns her attention on her rescuer. While this is being sorted out, a geologist named Kim Hwi (played by Park Joong-hoon) discovers an underwater disturbance is set to cause a massive tsunami. Naturally, no one listens to him since no one wants to believe that the biggest beach in the country will have to be evacuated.

By the time anyone listens, it’s already too late-ten minutes stands between the beach and water borne destruction. The cast for this movie might be large, but each character stands apart as distinctive and this makes the movie stand out above other disaster movies where the majority of the characters simply seem to be nothing more than screaming cannon fodder .

While not the most imaginative movie, Haeundae’s stellar cast and director turns just another disaster movie into something well worth watching and since there is more to this movie than rampant destruction, it’s something that’s a little easier to sink one’s teeth into. It’s definitely not the best movie out there, but it’s not a bad watch and if you’re into the genre, it’s worth seeing. "

Now Laughing must deal with the law, choose to be loyal to his boss or to Inspector Xian, and whether to continue his relationship with Karen. Which path will he follow in the end?

RATING: 8.5/10
NOTE: I'm not sure if I have a fair judgment for this movie since I'm a fan of character Laughing Gor from E.U series. :p
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" “Laughing Gor” is somewhat of a phenomenon in Hong Kong- just so you know how this movie came to be made. A character on the recently-concluded TVB series “Emergency Unit”, “Laughing Gor” was a senior triad member who was revealed in later episodes to be an undercover for the police. His death in episode 22 caused an uproar among fans- it attracted more than 120,000 users to his Facebook group, even an application where users could lay virtual offerings for him- and not even his comeback at the last episode could appease them.

So it was decided that “Laughing Gor” would get his very own movie, and hence “Turning Point”, a prequel of how he came to be a police officer under deep cover in the triads. The movie itself is somewhat history in the making- since when have you heard of a supporting character on a TVB series so popular it gets its own movie, complete with heavyweights Anthony Wong, Francis Ng and Eric Tsang. Just as notable is how this movie managed to attract Shaw Brothers to produce its first movie after a 7-year dormancy.

So it’s really an understatement to say that “Turning Point” arrives on a wave of anticipation. But to better appreciate prolific HK director Herman Yau’s new film, it’s better to tone down your expectations just a notch. “Turning Point” is no “Infernal Affairs”- the magnum opus of HK undercover cop/triad movies- although the similarities are unmistakeable. Both films feature HK film industry stalwarts Wong, Ng and Tsang; and both films deal with the perils and difficulties of undercover work.

Where “Infernal Affairs” had Andy Lau and Tony Leung on opposite sides of the law, here both sides of the law reside in just one character, Laughing (Michael Tse reprising his very-popular role). Laughing is a double undercover- a triad member sent by his boss Yi (Anthony Wong) to infiltrate the police whom in turn sends him back to spy on Yi. It’s no surprise that Laughing will eventually have to choose which side he’s on- and fans will immediately see how this prequel fits in with the series.

But with or without knowledge of how Laughing’s “Turning Point” will turn out, there is still enough here that fans and neophytes will enjoy. Written by Johnnie To regular Yip Tin Shing, “Turning Point” probably has enough material to develop another TV series focused on Laughing. But its tightly condensed story isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since it also makes for a very engaging 90-mins. Indeed, unlike some HK movies which quickly run out of something to say, “Turning Point” actually has a rich tale to tell.

Unfortunately, director Herman Yau is not necessarily the most skilful director around. He uses one too many flashbacks to narrate all that exposition, instead of building it slowly from the beginning into the story. Thankfully, Herman Yau still knows how to keep a movie going, so “Turning Point” doesn’t quite lose its pace as it goes backwards and forwards.

The real standout of the film, and also its greatest asset, is its A-list cast. It’s been a while since Anthony Wong and Francis Ng shared the screen together and “Turning Point” is a reminder of why they are two of the best actors in HK. Both Wong and Ng play their quirky offbeat characters with gleeful abandon- Wong the flamboyant triad boss keeping a dead-serious look while sporting thick eyeshadow, eyeliner and even ruby red lipstick; and Ng playing a borderline psychopath that’s arrogant, brash and impetuous. Together, they almost steal the limelight from Michael Tse’s Laughing, ultimately the point of the entire film.

Yes, this movie was made because of Laughing and fans of Laughing. But director Herman Yau has taken the opportunity to deliver a good old-fashioned HK triad movie reminiscent of those HK used to churn out in the ‘80s- complete with some of the best names in the HK film industry. Whether you’re a “Laughing” fan or not, “Turning Point” is still an engaging and entertaining thriller worth your time. "

Castaway On The Moon

Genre: Drama, Comedy
Starring: Jeong Jae-Young, Jeong Ryeo-Won, Park Young-Seo
Release year: 2009
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
A man named KIM jumps into the dark, quiet waters of the Han River. He wakes up and finds himself lying on strange ground, covered with sand. For a second, he thinks he is in heaven, but soon recognizes that he simply drifted to a nameless island in the river. In one of the riverside apartment buildings, there’s a girl who hasn’t ventured out of her room for years. With her dishevelled hair and in the same old clothes she’s worn for years, she looks just like a castaway. Then one day, she catches sight of a man living alone on an island through her binoculars. Day after Day, his lonely but seemingly contented life triggers her curiosity and compels her to step out of her room after so many years. KIM’s extraordinary life becomes the inspiration for change in this girl’s lonely, detached life.

RATING: 9/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" No one should be shocked to read that director Lee Hey-Jun continues in the tradition of other recent and notable Korean filmmakers who mix, very successfully, drama and comedy. Castaway on the Moon flips easily between the drama of a man trying to survive with no food or water and the same man who appears to be loosing his mind. The story takes an unexpected turn partway through when Mr. Kim picks up an admirer, a young woman whose entire life is lived through a computer, and though at this point the film could have gone off the rails into sappy romance, it manages to stay true to the original story while simply adding a layer. The relationship, a sort of romance from afar, changes them both while making some very valid and poignant comments on society.

Lee Hey-Jun’s film has many good things going for it. It’s funny, smart, touching and romantic but perhaps most importantly is the fact that it manages to entertain while making observations on our way of life. Though we may laugh at Mr. Kim’s dilemma of no food or water, it quickly becomes clear that most city dwellers in a similar situation would find themselves with the same conundrums. What to eat when you can’t walk into a grocery store or a restaurant? What sort of life are we leading sitting behind a computer for hours at a time? What sort of relationships are we forming or breaking?

Though it serves up a dollop of humor and an excellent performance from Jae-yeong Jeong as Mr. Kim (a performance that, in my opinion, gives Tom Hanks a run for his award nomination), Castaway on the Moon puts forth some big questions, ones that many individuals may be up against in today’s tough economic times. This is the best type of film: one that entertains but not at the cost of intelligence. It flounders a little at the end but overall, Castaway on the Moon is a must see. "

K-20 Legend Of The Mask

Genre: Action, Crime
Starring:
Takeshi Kaneshiro - Heikichi Endo
Takako Matsu - Yoko Hashiba
Toru Nakamura- Kogoro Akechi
Release year: 2008
Language: Japanese
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
The story takes place in an alternative Tokyo which has taken a different history. In the fictional capital Teito where the aristocrats continue to thrive since the 19th Century, there is a wide gap between the rich and the poor. The aristocrats own 90% of the wealth in the capital. In the city, there are rumors about a mysterious thief, who only steals from the rich with incredible ways like magician. People call him K-20, that's short for "Kaijin Niju-Menso" (the Phantom Thief with 20 faces).

RATING: 8/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" K-20 is not the name of the hero, but the villain, and the movie opens with him already established. The villain is established before the hero and the hero is born out of the necessity to stop him; I can’t think of a single other entry that I’ve ever seen that has done this and that includes the foreign fare. Usually the storyline of the hero’s rise either concludes prior to, or runs congruent with, the villain’s. But in K-20, the only reason this guy wants to be a hero is so he can take down this one bad guy and clear his name. Also, a hero who has completely selfish motives is interesting. We never see this guy save a kitten or punch a mugger in the jaw because all of his time and energy is spent trying to save his own ass. He doesn’t even wear any kind of a mask, or cape, or cowl, or…..paperbag? Actually the whole hero/villain relationship is challenged in K-20. The villain is just as much the dystopian society in which they live as it is K-20 himself. Poverty and class structure are motivations for both hero and villain and ultimately the ending hints at a unification of those motives in a very cool way.

The action sequences in this are a lot of fun. The hero, I keep calling him that because he’s not even given a name, being an acrobat allows for some really fantastic, parkour moments that seemed to be the answer to the question of what it would look like if DC took over the District B-13 franchise. He also has a sweet grappling hook attached to his arm that gives the film a Spider-Man flavor despite defying several laws of physics in the process. I thought the final fight scene between K-20 and the hero was really spectacular and slow motion was applied generously but not in excess. I could even forgive moments of lousy CG because they came, more often than not, in moments of high octane craziness so the stark contrast to reality is altogether negligible. I think my biggest complaint with the film is that it needed more action sequences to justify it’s superfluous runtime.

K-20 is far too long. It needs to be trimmed down like nobody’s business; at least 20 minutes in my estimation. The problem is that you have all these exposition scenes that further explain other exposition scenes that were perfectly clear the first time around. It almost seemed that the film was trying to be as long as it possibly could and sacrificed pacing to achieve that. I have a theory that they might have been of the mindset that the runtime of The Dark Knight somehow factors into its success and they were trying to mimic that here. But the reason The Dark Knight is so long is because it has an epic story to tell and not a single moment of that film is expendable. K-20 on the other hand, well let’s just say it needs a shave. If it tightened up its runtime and replaced redundant plot devices with more action-y moments, this really could have been an all around phenomenal film.

The Upside: Really cool Japanese superhero film that introduces just as many new concepts as it borrows from American titles.

The Downside: An inflated runtime that may have you nodding off in the middle of the film.

On the Side: This is the feature debut for director Shimako Sato, who has made a name for himself directing cinematic sequences for video games. "
