2006

SYNOPSIS:
Gang-du is a dim-witted man working at his father's tiny snack bar near the Han River. One day, Gang-du's one and only daughter Hyun-seo comes back from school irritated. She is angry at her uncle, Nam-il, who visited her school as her guardian shamelessly drunk. Ignoring her father's excuses for Nam-il, Hyun-seo is soon engrossed in her aunt Nam-joo's archery tournament on TV. Meanwhile, outside of the snack bar, people are fascinated by an unidentified object hanging onto a bridge. In an instant, the object reveals itself as a terrifying creature turning the riverbank into a gruesome sea of blood¡¦ Amid the chaos, Hyun-seo is helplessly snatched up by the creature right before Gang-du's eyes. These unforeseen circumstances render the government powerless to act. But receiving a call of help from Hyun-seo, the once-ordinary citizen Gang-du and his family are thrust into a battle with the monster to rescue their beloved Hyun-seo.

REVIEW:
" It's hard to write about Bong Joon-ho's The Host (the original Korean title is "Creature") without inserting puns on the word "monster." The temptation arises not only because of the subject matter, but because everything about the film -- its scale, its budget, its record-breaking performance at the box office, its overseas potential -- is huge within the context of the local film industry. It is a monster movie -- about a truck-sized mutant that crawls out of the Han River and unleashes terror upon the citizens of Seoul -- and yet, it is not one. Part of The Host's appeal is that its core concerns are somewhat slippery, and hard to pinpoint.

The Host You could just as well call The Host a family movie. Hee-bong (Byun Hee-bong) is the owner of a small food stand in the Han River Citizen's Park, selling squid, candy and beer to people who have come out to enjoy the sun. Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) is one of his three children, a man who seems a bit slow mentally and whose one motivating strength is a devotion to his schoolage daughter Hyun-seo (Ko Ah-sung). Rounding out the family is Nam-joo (Bae Doona), an amateur competitive archer and her brother Nam-il (Park Hae-il), a former student radical who at present is drunk and unemployed. There are no mothers in the family -- Hee-bong's wife having passed on and Gang-du's having run away. It's a dysfunctional group, held together only by the crisis that faces them, and yet the family dynamics will feel familiar to many viewers.

It is when the creature snatches the young Hyun-seo that the family becomes aligned against this unknown biological threat. However, in what is perhaps a telling reflection of our times, the family ends up spending more time battling health professionals, military personnel, and other manifestations of the government than the beast itself. The Host mixes more than a few political barbs into its genre cocktail: a bit of SARS here, a bit of Iraq there. Yet it's with a black sense of playfulness and absurdity that these satirical quips are delivered to the audience, suggesting that the film's chief concerns lie elsewhere.

The monster itself is not a force of pre-meditated evil, bent on destroying civilization. (In this sense it is more Katrina than 9/11) Like any other natural disaster, this clever, ugly, lethal, clumsy, and at times ridiculous monster does what it does simply because it is part of its nature. It eats humans because it is hungry, and because it enjoys it. So in some ways it's hard to see The Host as a contest between good and evil. From a moral viewpoint (but not an emotional one) the film resembles wildlife videos of lions taking down gazelles.

Yet in the course of the showdown with the beast, there's a very human sense of loneliness that seeps into the film. Part of it comes from the realization that, in a crisis, one's country may be of no help -- or indeed, may turn against you. A disaster that rips through the fabric of society may reveal that the laws, conventions and beliefs that keep us civilized lie only on the surface. Perhaps the other source of the film's sadness is reflected in a startling line delivered by Byun Hee-bong at the story's mid-point: "Have you ever smelled it? The stomach of a parent who's lost a child... Once it goes rotten, the smell can travel for miles..." The family unit at the center of The Host faces the prospect of losing a girl who is dearer to them than anything else, and this too pushes them up against the cruel, arbitrary forces that shape our lives.

For me, The Host will not displace Memories of Murder as my favorite Korean film of this decade. Every scene of the latter work is golden, and the more you watch it, the more it resonates as a haunting, brilliantly-shaped composition. The Host is more of a spectacle film, a sensual burst of inspiration that picks us up and carries us along on a harrowing ride (this must be seen in the theater if at all possible). It is perhaps unfair to expect Bong to come up aces two films in a row; but it is surprising is that he came so close to doing just that. "

There is nothing Eun-jin will not do for her sister...

RATING: 8.5/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
It's no secret that gangster comedies were the most popular genre in Korea last year. Kick The Moon, Guns & Talks, Hi Dharma! and My Boss My Hero all did great business. The most successful of these was My Wife is a Gangster, which possesses a fine blend of comedy, action and even a little drama. Also, the film's unusual screen couple was likely an audience draw. Shin Eun-kyung (of The Ring Virus, Downfall and The Young Man) isn't exactly used to comedies, and seeing her in this role was certainly a big attraction. Add Park Sang-myun, perhaps the funniest supporting actor in Korea, and this was sure to be a big hit.
Shin is Eun-jin, No.2 of a local gang. We're introduced to her in impressive fashion, as she cuts rival gangsters to pieces with her trademark weapon (a pair of scissors). She has made it so far in the male-dominated Jopok world, for one reason only: she's not exactly the most feminine character you'll find. Even worse, her behavior makes that quite obvious.
There are reasons for her lack of femininity, such as losing her sister and parents at a very young age. However, when she finds her long lost sister, the shock is big. Her sister is not only dying of cancer, but her last wish is to see her little sister married and with children! For Eun-jin (known as Mantis in the underworld) it seems like no big deal at first, but when she discovers the consequences of having a partner...well, problems begin.
The best candidate for Eun-jin is civil servant Soo-il (Park Sang-myun). He's had no success with women so far, and seems like a gentle, faithful man. While their wedding doesn't go too smoothly, nothing is enough to prepare Soo-il for what will come next. Eun-jin dropkicks her newfound hubby to the floor every time he tries to touch her. She brings home an entire Chinese restaurant when Soo-il calls a few colleagues home for dinner. And, trying to follow her sister's advice to have children, she literally rapes Soo-il all over the house (elevators included). Now, all of this would be fine if the rival gang didn't know of Mantis' issues. They plan to exploit her problems to oust her from power, and as you would probably expect, a big fight ensues.
Meanwhile, director Jo Jin-kyu also attempts to give life to the other characters. From the young gang recruits to the senior members, everyone has a story to tell and some subplot to follow. This lessens the impact of the main plot, and in the second half of the film, things begin to drag quite a bit. There's even some unnecessary melodrama towards the end which makes little sense.
My Wife is a Gangster is at its best when it focuses on Park and Shin's chemistry. When poking fun at Jopok (both the world, and film genre) conventions, the role of women in Korean society and many other things, the film is often hilarious. Park and Shin redeem the film with their terrific performances. If they had been helped by a more even pace, and a more capable director (such as Kim Sang-jin, Kim Ji-woon or Jang Jin), the end result could have been a stronger film. It's a shame the director couldn't piece everything together to offer a more coherent plot. But don't let those few flaws mislead you. My Wife is a Gangster is quite a fun experience, thanks to its Jopok jargon, well-choreographed wire-fu, and slapstick comedy.
Also, this role will mean more comedies for Shin Eun-kyung, who's starring alongside Jung Joon-ho (of My Boss, My Hero fame) in the recently released Romantic Comedy. My Wife is a Gangster is a nice change of pace of Shin. Her performance as Eun-jin has enabled her to show some welcome range, and has confirmed her status as one of Korea's finest actresses.

REVIEW:
Three years after Hollywood's commercially successful remake of Ringu introduced Western civilization to the notion of Asian horror, I still have yet to figure out what the fuss (or perhaps fright) is all about. Subsequent remakes, like The Grudge, were mostly boring endeavors laced with intermittent 'what the...?' moments, while the precious few actual Asian films to secure distribution, among them The Eye and the unwatchable Gozu, proved - in this critic's estimation, anyway - tedious exercises in atmosphere that built to moments that asked not merely 'what the...?' but 'what the hell was I thinking wasting my time on this?'

Needless to say, I entered Three... Extremes, an Asian horror anthology, no less, with a bit of trepidation.

Thankfully, I was fully satisfied by the trio of twisted tales, at least in regards to my previous experiences with such films: They were just as filled with weird and wild moments as their predecessors, and yet having familiarized myself with the vagaries of the underlying formulas (a creepy scenario + gross-out imagery + incest = atmosphere galore) I never once asked 'what the...?'

Truth be told, the main attraction for me was the second story, Cut. The forty minute short was conceived by director Park Chan-Wook, whose previous film Oldboy I loved, and whom I suspect was slighted grievously by someone in a past life (if not this one), as he excels in revenge tales. Here, a film director named Ryu (Byung-hun Lee) finds himself and his wife at the mercy of an extra who is quite literally insane with jealousy at his success both personally and professionally; before long - and much like in Oldboy - Ryu must make a choice that might compromise not only his life, but his entire system of beliefs. Suffice it to say that the man who once chronicled a ten-to-one showdown in one unbroken, bloody take pulls no punches capturing Ryu's decision in devastating detail.

Pyrokinesis

Yû Yoshizawa as Kouichi Kido

Release year: 2000

Synopsis:

Junko is a quiet and good-natured young lady born with a secret power unlike anything you have ever seen. Pyrokinesis, a deadly form of ESP, enables her to incinerate anything on command. Her simple, uneventful life is disrupted and she is pushed past her boiling point when a group of murdering teenage thugs kills a close friend. Now no one is safe from the fires of vengeance!

RATING: 8 /10

USER RATING:

REVIEW:
"As the title makes clear, this Japanese movie is about psychic arson - the mental power to start fires. It features the same genre concept as Mark L. Lester's rather vacuous science fictional espionage thriller Firestarter (1984), but Pyrokinesis (aka: Kurosufaiâ) is superior in every way to the American product (based on a book by Stephen King at a time when Hollywood was churning out indifferent King adaptations at the rate of two or three a year), and Shusuke Kaneko (best known in the West for his contribution to 1994's anthology Necronomicon, and the 1990s' Gamera movies) succeeds in making this effective as both a dark urban thriller and as powerful SF-horror drama.
Although she works in a busy office, Junko (Akiko Yada) has an isolated and friendless life at home. She avoids contact with colleagues because of the secret and unstable power that haunts her dreams, and causes her to boil a swimming pool dry while struggling to control her hazardous emotional state. When Junko attends a party, befriends the young sister of her co-worker Kazuki (Hideaki Ito, from Princess Blade), and a sadistic gang of teenagers kill the girl, Junko decides to use her fiery ability to avenge her friend's murder. But open-minded detectives begin to suspect Junko is somehow responsible for the spontaneous combustion of the punk gangsters, and there's a mystery man in town with extraordinary ESP and mind control powers who may be connected to a corrupt high ranking police officer...
Imaginative, engagingly thoughtful, ultimately rewarding viewing, Pyrokinesis (alternate title: Cross Fire, geddit?) has excellent intrigues and fine performances to match the special effects and spectacular superhero action, and is perhaps best described as X-Men meets The X-Files. This is a compelling fantasy of vengeance that's unafraid to examine in full the motivations and human failings of its quasi-comicbook heroine, and the moral complacency of people in authority concerned more with politicking and the embarrassment of losing face, than righting wrongs or simply doing their job proficiently.
Don't let its foreign origin and subtitled format put you off. Pyrokinesis is one of the best plain-clothes superhero movies yet produced. If you enjoyed such psi-powered thrillers as The Fury (1978), any of the series of Scanners (1980) films, or Rockne S. O'Bannon's Fear (1990), this is what you've been waiting for."

REVIEW:
" It doesn't happen often that a vietnamese movie gets into my hands... Actually, to be honest, it's the first time, and at first glance you might come to believe, that this is in fact a thai Tony-Jaa action flick. But wait... where is Tony Jaa? Still, there is this guy called Johnny Nguyen that somehow seems familiar. Right! He also played in "Tom Yum Goong", where he embodied one of the villians. But only few know that Johnny Nguyen, who is trained in Kung Fu, Wushu, Aikido and other martials arts since the age of 8, is also an internationally acknowledged stuntman, whose degree of awareness is rapidly going up. For one thing, this might be because of his charismatic looks, but the true reason for that naturally is that his body control and martial arts expertise are breathtaking. The action in "The Rebel" is high-impact style, ruthless and realistic. Still, there are also enough acrobatic moves - without any wire-work, mind you - that can easily stand up to Tony Jaa's efforts. What more does a martial arts fan want?

Maybe a decent story. And that's what "The Rebel" seems to aim for at first appearance. The film is quite political in tone and wants to portray the difficult colonial time of Vietnam by the French. Who is fighting against who and why? It soon becomes apparant that there are different ideologies, two parties, in the shape of Cuong and Thuy, who fight each other, even though in the end it all amounts to Vietnamese butchering their own people. At one point the movie almost even tries to show things from an objective viewpoint, and at another point Thuy says, that the French also did some good things for the country, like building streets or towns, but naturally freedom can't be the price for that. Towards the end it becomes more and more clear, that "The Rebel" can't do without bringing some pathos into the story after all, which isn't a lucky choice, as the story loses its political toned focus and becomes a more personal chase and vengeance trip. That's a pity...

Moreover, the dramatic moments can't always be quite convincing. On the one hand this is because of the actors, of course, as they aren't always bringing home the emotions. Even if Johnny Nguyen has more to offer acting-wise than Donnie Yen, this is still not enough for a film that often works on a drama level. His female partner on screen also isn't always convincing, since she often seems too emotionless. Furthermore, we can't really connect to these two. This especially applies to Thuy, since her actions are simply too merciless. At one point she even more or less executes a french soldier. Well, I'm no friend of the French normally, but that's just too much. Therefore, we always look at the events with a certain distance. Only Dustin Nguyen manages to portray a decent villian. Even though his portrayal remains shallow his character still has motives for his actions and also succeeds in delivering a good antagonist.

The emotionally laden moments are also experiencing distraction by the unfortunate editing. The change from one scene to another is way too abrupt, so that the otherwise well-done directing looks somehow (and unnecessarily) cheap. Apart from that "The Rebel" can surprise with some nice costumes, and the sets are quite appealing, too. Moreover, the soundtrack from Christopher Wong deserves some praise, as it adds a lot to the movie with some nice tunes.
However, many will watch this movie mainly because of its fights and you really won't be disappointed on that part. Johnny Nguyen works a lot with Muay Thai Kickboxing techniques and often mixes them with Vovinam, a vietnamese martial art. Furthermore, he over and over again performs some impressive acrobatics/jumps out of the wushu repertoire, which adds some more color to the rough fights. Dustin Nguyen and Ngo Thanh Van actually aren't trained in any martial arts, but you won't notice, as they both can show some nice and sometimes unusual moves, too. Finally seeing a new power woman in the shape of Ngo Thanh Van is especially satisfying.

The problem, however, remains that director Charlie Nguyen works too little with the characters, which means that their inner conflicts and self-doubt is a topic merely touched. It would have been nice, if the producers would had worked more with the story, but maybe this wasn't possible with a budget of only 1,6 Mio Dollar, which still means that "The Rebel" is one of the more expensive movies in Vietnam. There are some good ideas and the washed-out colors also add to the impression that this isn't primarily a martial arts movie, but a political drama. For the fact that the film, at least at the beginning, successfully works on both levels, the director deserves some credit. Action-fans, though, will just dig the acrobatics and the tough fighting sequences. It's apparent, that there had to be some compromising, and yet "The Rebel" remains an ambitious action-drama, that deserves respect. For this reason, and because of my naive assumption that Vietnam couldn't do any good action flick, I'm willing to be a little bit more giving concerning the rating. "The Rebel" surely is recommendable. "

3-Iron

a.k.a Empty House / Bin jip

Genre: Romance, Drama
Starring: Jae Hee Song, Ju Jin-mo, Lee Seung-yeon, Gweon Hyeok-ho, Choi Jeong-ho
Release year: 2004
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Tae-suk (Jae Hee) drifts around on his motorcycle looking for empty houses to stay in. He goes from door to door and puts up flyers in the keyholes of each house. He later breaks into the house where the flyer has not been removed, assuming that the owner is away.
Tae-suk lives in the empty house until the owners return, but never steals or ruins anything. He spends a night or a day squatting in, repaying their unwitting hospitality by doing laundry or small repairs. Before leaving, he puts everything back as it used be.
One day, sneaking into a wealthy home, Tae-suk meets his destiny - a beautiful, lonely wife named Sun-hwa, trapped in a loveless marriage. Without saying a word, the pair begin an erotic game of cat-and-mouse, until her abusive husband returns home, unleashing a shocking burst of violence.

RATING: 8.75/10

REVIEW:
" Poetic is what I would call this film. It has such poignant quality to it. It reminds me of the dream like state of Last Life in the Universe, yet it retains its own uniqueness. Dialogue was not essential between the two characters. It would have lessen the tension in the film if it did. Director Kim Ki Duk understood perfectly that what was said was beautifully captured by the lens, and in doing so he let the audience ease into the film efortlessly.

Tae-suk (Jae Hee) is a jobless college-educated mute (by choice) vagrant that breaks into vacationing people's homes and treats himself to the bear essentials - food, a place to sleep and shower - and in return he fixes broken appliances, cleans the house and does their laundry. He also takes pictures of himself along portraits of the owner's home. It's as if he wants to ingrain himself temporarily in their lives. He does not stay long and moves around quite often. He meets Sun Hwa (Lee Seong Yun), a silent, meek and physically abused housewife, in one of his break-ins. And this meeting is the catalyst to an unlikely and emotionally wrenching love story.

I've been a fan of Jae Hee since Delightful Girl Cheunyang[??]. He isn't overtly handsome like other korean actors and he isn't the most charismatic, yet he has the most intense expression when he keeps still and let his eyes talk. It's very obvious in this film that director Kim Ki Duk made use of Jae Hee's expressive facial expressions, particularly his eyes. Lee Seong Yun was superb in this film. She creates an effortless and almost serene quality in the film. She weaves a magical spell from the beginning with her quite rage towards her husband to her triumphant and vocal statement of love to Tae-suk.

Director Kim Ki Duk abandons his usual style of sweeping paronamic shots and themes of lust and violence. This film was tame compared to his previous films, yet this was the most stunning out of all of them. I've seen this film 3 times and each time I find something new to marvel at. I already miss the characters, and I would probably watch the film again after writing this. "

Mute Hee-Jin is working as a clerk in a fishing resort in the korean wilderness; selling baits, food and occiasionally her body to the fishing tourists. One day she falls in love to Hyun-Shik, who is on the run for the police and rescues him with a fish hook, when he tries to commit suicide.

RATING: ?/10

REVIEW:
" ...The woman's name has been listed on several web sites as Hee-Jin, but the print reviewed here gave no names for any of the characters in the subtitles. Whether it was a mistake or not, this makes the film more intriguing. Not giving the people names in such a serene and beautiful setting allows for a more effective blending with the ecosystem around them. The performances are great, and the film's theme seems to be how human beings treat each other, and their relation to nature. In the end, the man and woman forge a bond involving self-mutilation—again with fishhooks—and sail to a quiet part of the lake away from humanity in their own private ecosystem. The last shot of the film is hauntingly baffling and is completely open to the viewer's interpretation.
Viewers who are sensitive to real onscreen animal abuse should probably avoid this film altogether, as there are several scenes of fish and lizard mutilation, and some unexplained dog abuse as well. Ironically, the scenes involving violence against animals are more disturbing than the acts perpetrated against human beings. Hmmmm…maybe that's the whole point of the movie. The Isle is a weird movie but well worth a try for people looking for an art-house kind of experience.... "

Host and Guest

Genre: Drama
Starring: Ji-hwan Kang, Jae-rok Kim, Seong-su Kim
Release year: 2006
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Seoul, winter. Ho-jun, a recently divorced, part-time film-studies lecturer, moves to a small and shabby one-room flat. Having left his only son Gun with his ex-wife, Ho-jun lives a cheerless and destitute life. His negative and cynical attitude and his miserable situation drive him into a desperate depression.

RATING: ?/10
USER RATING:

REVIEW:
" Host & Guest begins with unwanted solicitation after unwanted solicitation. A mobile phone call turns out to be a sex line. A newspaper one has not subscribed to keeps showing up at the door. And at that same door, someone appears with "Good News" that for many isn't much good. Ho-jun (Kim Jae-rok, who until now has had small roles in films such as Christmas In August and A Hot Roof) is the owner of this door. Well, he may not be the owner, just the renter, because things aren't going well for Ho-jun. He's a divorced father with a little boy, he's out-of work as a film professor, and he's never made a film. He's also quite irascible, so it's compelling that he'd meet his opposite, the incredibly understanding Kye-sang (Kang Ji-hwan, who debuted in musical theatre, receiving recognition in Rocky Horror Picture Show in 2002 and as Danny in Grease in 2004 and more recently has appeared in TV dramas such as The Last Dance With Me), a Jehovah's Witness who comes to Ho-jun's door a second time in an improbable scenario to save Ho-jun from being trapped naked in his bathroom, ready to rest him on his bed sprawled out all Christ-complex-y. Both searching for something beyond their human existence, Ho-jun and Kye-sang become forced friends and we witness several moments of Ho-jun's anger at the world, contextualized within an elitism and entitlement that present some nearly Hong-ian discomforting moments. The film evolves into a discussion of family, faith, nationalism, war, and film, each of which I found myself appreciating, even if I'm not able to really say what, if anything, I'm supposed to "get" from this film.

Host & Guest The forced nature of that second meeting is the only major criticism I can make of Host & Guest. Otherwise, the film presents some wonderful images, such as this white aura that resonates from certain characters and window panes at the beginning, and awkward dialogue throughout that carries you across scene after scene. I don't mean that the dialogue is awkward, but that it causes awkward feelings in the characters and, if debut director Shin Dong-il (whose short The Holy Family screened at Cannes a few years back) has done his job fully suturing you with what you witness on screen, the audience as well. It is interesting how these characters keep missing each other yet keep wanting to stay with each other in spite of their ethical differences. It appears Ho-jun has more to learn from Kye-sang, but they receive each other on their own terms nonetheless. Both Kim and Kang put together excellent performances, most poignantly Kye-sang's speech at the end which is wonderfully tempered and poised. Kang and Shin have put together perhaps the most sympathetic portrayal of a Jehovah's Witness without getting too preachy on either side of the congregation.

The context of the film is the recession South Korea was experiencing at the time this film was made. Ho-jun struggles with his masculinity and his entitlements along with his general asocial tendencies that his immersion in film only exacerbates. There's a compelling scene in a multiplex theater that is screening, of all things, an obscure Turkish film, where Ho-jun's attempt to recover from economic wounds only makes him more pathetic. He lambastes the manager for not supporting independent cinema when in fact it is. Hell, the theater he's kicked out of is packed and its packed capacity is partly responsible for getting him kicked out, since he tried to sneak into a better seat other than the one he was assigned. (South Korean movie theaters require you to purchase tickets where you are assigned a specific seat.) Ho-jun is a character who is clearly his own worst enemy.

But he's not the only enemy in this picture. Images of U.S. President-Select George W. Bush make a few appearances and his image is mocked and ridiculed at each moment. Bush II's arrogance and willful ignorance that has caused so much harm and chaos in our world presently is paralleled with South Korea's own brand of conservative nationalism and Christianity that allow cover for things such as a war in Iraq based on false pretenses. Ho-jun is just as willing to deface images of South Korea's nationalism as he is images of Bush II. But, as Ho-jun will learn from Kye-sang, as much as these humiliations from afar provide catharsis for his wounded self and wounded world, they are a far distance from the stands that need to be taken when we are called to the stand. With religious symbolism abounding without getting too didactic, Host & Guest is a film that I'll let in again if it comes knocking on my door a second time. "
