Review:
" From writer/director Jang Hyeon-Su (Born to Kill) comes Everybody Has Secrets, a comic tale of sex and secrecy that argues that not all secrets need to be revealed, especially if they can fuel a loving relationship. This remake of a little-known Irish film called About Adam features popular Korean idol Lee Byung-Hun (JSA) as a modern day Don Juan who ends up bedding a trio of sisters, while at the same time irrevocably changing their lives…which begs the question, is it a change for the better?
The film begins with Mi-Young, the headstrong youngest sibling, cruelly dumping her loyal boyfriend in search of Mr. Right. While singing at a local nightclub, she spots Choi Su-Hyeon (Lee), and believing she's found her Prince Charming, quickly makes her move. And it's only a matter of time before the two are dating and - at least, on the surface - much in love. Their rather perfunctory romance eventually reaches its high point when Mi-Young proposes to Su-Hyeon at a family gathering. Portraying the role of the old fashioned gentleman, Su-Hyeon poses the question back at Mi-Young, who of course, accepts. Sounds like a run-of-the-mill romance, huh? Well, this is just the first quarter of the film!
It's during this festive occasion that we truly begin to grasp that there's more going on in the film than we've been lead to believe, since there is at least one attendee who doesn't look so happy: Su-Young (Choi Ji-Woo, from the mega popular Winter Sonata), a bespectacled, twenty-seven year old virgin and middle sister of the family. To explain her dismay, the film then flashes backward, as previous scenes are cast in a new light thanks to the inclusion of additional scenes that occurred "in the gaps" of what we've already witnessed. In this middle section of the film, the timeline is then fleshed out to show that Su-Hyeon and Su-Young have been carrying on an affair. Su-Young's story runs parallel with the previous one, as we watch their illicit relationship develop and eventually get to see the consequences of his proposal and how that impacts the bookish Su-Young. What's interesting here is that in comparison with his relationship with Mi-Young, his affair with Su-Young seems to be far more solid and, quite possibly, the perfect match. And when the waterworks come (this is a Korean movie, after all), we begin to suspect that what we're really watching is yet another melodrama about a man torn between two loves. But not so fast. There's one more sister.
And it's when the film then turns its attention to Jin-Young (Choo Sang-Mi), the clan's eldest daughter, that one begins to seriously question Su-Hyeon's motives. Married to a doctor and raising a child, Jin-Young is a woman who's lost sight of her own identity, so immersed is she in her roles as wife and mother. Her boorish husband pays little attention to her and their sex life is practically nonexistent. Here, the super-smooth Su-Hyeon reawakens Jin-Young's buried sexuality with predictable results. As with the previous story, Jin-Young's reveals that there was even more going on than we've seen in Mi-Young's and Su-Young's individual stories, as those scenes take on even more new meanings.
The last quarter (or less) of the movie deals with the fallout of all these affairs. Of course, with Su-Hyeon and Mi-Young engaged to be married amidst all this extracurricular sexual activity, any hopes for a happy resolution seem impossible. Luckily for him, Su-Hyeon is the master of the impossible, and even better, it seems he's not the only one who has secrets.
Although based on About Adam (starring Kate Hudson, among other actors), Everybody Has Secrets is similar in many respects to the Witches of Eastwick, the star-studded Hollywood flick that featured a devilish Jack Nicholson unleashing the fire hidden inside three women. And a supernatural explanation for Su-Hyeon's motives will probably cross the viewer's mind more than once during the film. He is, for all intents and purposes, the perfect man: sensitive, yet manly, able to become whatever the woman needs whenever the occasion arises. Yet it's notable that at all times this ability never seems to be a calculated deception. And perhaps that's a credit to Lee Byung-Hun, who imbues the morally ambiguous character with such a level of sincerity that he never seems like a sleazeball. But the movie still hinges on the question: why does he do the things that he does? And just who is he really? There are answers given in the film, but the ambiguity of just who or what he is may frustrate some viewers looking for either definitive answers or a moral justification.
Surrounding Lee Byung-Hun is an excellent cast, with each of the three actress giving fine performances. The best of the lot would have to be Choi Ji-Woo, whose character's transformation from bookworm to sexually liberated woman is a wonderful sight to behold. As indicated earlier, her character's romance with Su-Hyeon is probably the most interesting and helps hold the film together.
But it's not all sex and romance; there's a lot of humor at work in the film. The funniest bit in the film involves a short interlude in one of the sisters' stories in which the girl's teenage brother (Jeon Jae-Young, from Wet Dreams 2 and Taegukgi) enlists Su-Hyeon's help in scoring with his chaste girlfriend. Hilariously, the magnetic Su-Hyeon seems to charm him as well, as the poor boy begins to fear that he's turning gay! But just when you think that the uber-charming Su-Hyeon has seduced the boy's girlfriend right out from under him, it's revealed that he's up to something far more positive.
From a structural standpoint, Everybody Has Secrets is a joy to watch. It's not the first film to utilize this variation of flashbacks (nor is About Adam), but the way in which events unfold and "re-unfold" is delightful departure from the more traditionally linear storytelling methods employed in most movies.
Of course, some viewers may end up having a problem with the premise altogether, particularly those possessing a moral code about sex that they feel must extend to the movies that they watch. But for audiences who don't find themselves confusing or conflating movies with real life, Everybody Has Secrets is a sexy, fun-filled picture that makes for an entertaining diversion. "

A Masterpiece in my Life

Genre: Drama, Romance, Mature 18+

Starring:

Park Joong-Hoon as Kim In-gi
Song Yun-ah as Kang Yeo-kyeong
Hwang In-sung as Myeong-jun
Park Cheol-min as Jin-won
Kim Yeo-lang as Jin-hie

Release year: 2000

Language: Korean

Subtitle: English

Synopsis:

Instead of directing his soft porn movie, In-gi talks heatedly about the film scenario he is working on. He had to abandon his dreams of becoming a serious director in order to pay off his parents' debts. So to make quick money, he began to direct soft porn movies. But his dream of making a masterpiece has not died yet. He visits an old college buddy who is now a film producer. There he meets another college friend, Myung-joon, who is now a famous director.

Through Myung-joon, In-gi is introduced to the love of his life, Yeo-kyung, a struggling screenwriter. From this day onward, In-gi delights in finding the things they have in common - from their affinity to banana-flavored milk and forgotten comic book characters. In-gi is fueled by his love for Yeo-kyung to make a masterpiece.

Yeo-kyung is also emboldened by In-gi's affections and decides to become a true writer. They begin to collaborate on a story about the love between a circus clown and the daughter of the circus troupe director. Their characters begin to come to life and a true masterpiece is in the making.

Review:

" In-Gi (Park Jung-Hun of "Nowhere to Hide") is an optimistic man who dreams of becoming an accomplished filmmaker and, one day, making an original movie that will touch the hearts of audiences everywhere. However, he has a problem that may deflect his dreams: He's cornered himself into the world of sleazy adult films and with a handful of titles like "Nowhere To Fuck" (one of the few inside jokes referencing Park Jung-Hun's real-life hit movie) under his belt, it may be hard for him to make that leap into the mainstream side of the movie business. Unfortunately, directing adult films was something In-Gi was never proud of. He only started making them for a quick buck to help pay off family debts and now, he's known for it.

In addition to his scarred reputation for making films for perverts, he also has a disability to construct a complete screenplay. Since he wants his next movie to be "his" masterpiece, he feels that the plot, ideas, and characters should all come from his own mind. Although he has a basic premise, In-Gi finds it impossible to start building the foundation of his idea. It's when In-Gi meets up with an old colleague, who also works in the film industry, that he begins to see the light of day. Aware of his writer's block, In-Gi's friend introduces him to Yoo-kyung (Song Yun-Ah), an attractive woman who's known for her excellent creative plot writing.

In-Gi and Yoo-kyung start to have script meetings regularly. Although the initial scenarios are coming from In-Gi, Yoo-kyung guides him in the right direction. When he can't find the correct word, she becomes his thesaurus. When he falls into a slump, she relieves him in offering different alternatives to make a scene work. Overall, she brings out the visionary director in In-Gi. Slowly, Yoo-kyung becomes more and more enthralled with In-Gi's uplifting personality, despite his known career shadows. Her thoughts and ideas for his script start to bare a resemblance toward her own feelings for In-Gi. From here on out, the irony thickens and In-Gi discovers the real meaning of his future masterpiece.

What attracted me to this film was definitely the fresh plot about the adult director trying to move on to better and bigger things in his career. Topping off the catchy plot with Park Jung-Hun - one of my favorite Korean actors - "A Masterpiece in My Life" was bound to become something I'd be amazed with. After watching the product, I was disappointed. Although it had it's moments - both comical and dramatic, carried a nice art-house touch, and showcased a great cast giving it their all; the film never really hit the spot. Filled with too much forgettable dialogue between many characters, it had the tendency to keep me unfocused and uninterested. At times, I was literally bored.

The instances where the film did work was with the interaction between the two main characters; not when they were talking about the "masterpiece", but when they did every trivial thing around it. In other words, the film worked where it wasn't supposed to work, which left very little for the desired plot. The imaginary scenes which depicted the working-film were a nice touch, but would have meant more if the film's initial plot was stronger.

One thing's for sure, Park Jung-Hun once again proves his versatility. From serial killer ("Say Yes") to hard-boiled cop ("Nowhere To Hide") to a happy-go-lucky film director, he's another fine example of a great actor. Unless you're a Park Jung-Hun fan like me, you'll appreciate his performance with "A Masterpiece in My Life". If you're not, then you may want to skip it. "

Review:
" Japanese finger-trembler 'Ring' is often described as vastly superior to 'The Ring', its remade American version from 2002. Personally, I'd have to call it a dead heat between the pair of them, with both movies inflicting the frighteners in different ways, despite basically sticking to the same lines.

Hideo Nakata's original, it's name changed here from 'Ringu' (presumably to avoid confusion with the penguin), introduces the technology-driven terror of a video even more horrifying than 'Police Academy: Mission to Moscow' on VHS. Whoever watches the vid (we're left to assume it hasn't been released yet on DVD) receives a creepy phonecall telling them they'll snuff it in seven day's time. Someone really should think about getting those calls traced by the phone company.

One such viewer is journalist Reiko (Nanako Matsushima), who soon sets about recruiting ex-hubby Ryuji (Hiroyuki Sanada) in attempting to track down the source of the spine-tingling tape before her deadline expires - literally. To make matters worse, she's got an ankle-biter called Yoichi (Rikiya Otaka) who also decides to watch the deadly video. The little fool! Couldn't he just stick to 'Barney' like all the other kids?

Though completely gore-free and also containing very few real shocks, this is quite possibly as scary a film as you'll see. That's thanks mainly to some convincing acting, fantastic application of dark atmospherics, and a sparingly-used but hugely effective soundtrack. Those who watch Gore Verbinski's remake first will be disappointed the horse scene - one of the most memorable features of the US version - isn't in this one. Verbinski's version also has a more interesting background story and doesn't rely as heavily on everyone apparently having ESP in order to move logically from one stage to the next.

Regardless, this is one of the most effective horror flicks I can ever recall seeing, with a fantastically foreboding ending (note the similarities between the final shot in this and in "

Synopsis:

Addicted tells the story of a married couple Eun-su and Ho-jin, whose younger brother Dae-jin also lives with the inseparable pair. Seemingly they enjoy the perfect life in harmony, Ho-jin is a caring, loving husband, while Eun-su shares the same uncontrollable affection. They are the perfect twoseome, whose relationship is looked upon as solid and ideal, a yardstick, if you will, for others to measure up to, an unshakeable bond.

Dae-jin, meanwhile, is carefree, behaves erratically and could do with finding himself a decent relationship in which he would have to care for someone else other than himself. However, their tranquil world comes crashing down around them when tragedy strikes one fateful day when two separate car accidents put both brothers in a coma. Dae-jin crashes his car during a car race and Ho-jin is involved in a taxi collision while on his way to the racing circuit. Only the younger sibling wakes, leaving Eun-su to restart her life alone without her husband.

Left disorientated, events take a strange twist as Dae-jin's behavior changes, beginning to resemble that of Ho-jin, leaving everyone familiar with his antics questioning his peculiar mannerisms. Through the trauma and hysteria, Dae-jin believes he is in fact his brother and that he is possessed. Eun-su is left to wonder if her husband's soul is trapped in the body of her brother-in-law or if he's just mentally unstable.

Synopsis:

Being tortured by the thought of an abortion, Joey finds herself becoming delusional and emotionally unstable.

She is frequently threatened by the sudden presence of strangers, and also feels stalked by a mysterious woman. The stalker actually confronts her on one occasion; making eye contact with her on a train platform, then, throwing herself at a running train! Joey breaks down at the sight of the suicide, only to discover later that "nobody" is found on the track.

Review:
" Here’s the thing about these “I see dead people” movies: if I woke up one day and realized I was seeing ghosts, I would be scared; at least, for the first couple of days, and weeks, and perhaps even the first couple of months. But after a while, I think I would get used to it. After all, it’s not like the ghosts ever do anything to me. They basically just stand there looking all creepy and whatnot. After a while, wouldn’t seeing ghosts just standing in the corner or sitting in the cab next to you be sort of…blah?

“The Eye 2″, the sequel to the Pang Brothers’ immensely popular — critically and commercially — 2002 horror film starring Angelica Lee, returns in 2004 with Qi Shu (”Looking For Mr. Perfect”) at the top of the marquee. Shu plays Joey, a distraught young woman whose suicide attempts end badly — with her still alive and now with the ability to see ghosts. One ghost in particular is haunting Joey, appearing to her at every turn. If that wasn’t bad enough, Joey discovers that she’s pregnant, and that darn persistent ghost seems to either want her baby, or has something to do with it.

To get it out of the way first: this is why I adore Qi Shu. She’s not only a pleasure to look at, but she’s proven to be a fine, fine actress indeed. Given the right material, the young woman excels on many levels. Rather kicking ass in “So Close” or playing the femme fatale in “Transporter”, Qi Shu has so successfully shed her Category III days that her transition from cheapie sex films to mainstream respect is nothing short of astounding. In “The Eye 2″, Shu is in top form. Beautiful, haunting, emotional, and switching back and forth with effortless flair.

But alas, I’m afraid Qi Shu is the only reason you’ll want to bother with “The Eye 2″. Although sold as a sequel to the Angelica Lee starrer (and in fact the premise, while not exactly the same, is close enough), this follow-up is just barely good enough to waste one’s time with. As with most Asian horror films, unless you are a complete novice to the genre, nothing here will even remotely scare you. “The Eye” gave me goose bumps and I swear the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. “The Eye 2″ can’t say the same.

Oh sure, the Pang brothers know how to make you jump. But getting the audience to jump is a lot easier than making them scared. To make the audience jump all you have to do is perform a quick whip with the camera and shower the audience with loud screeching noise. Then again, if all you’re capable of doing is make the audience jump by assaulting them with suddenly loud screeching noise and whipping the camera around to show a ghost standing in the background, you’re not trying very hard. When it comes to being a horror movie, I’m afraid “The Eye 2″ is too lazy to be effective.

Clocking in at a scant 80 minutes, “The Eye 2″ feels at least 30 minutes too long. Most of the film is devoted to Joey going about her life pining for her married lover Sam (Jesdaporn Pholdee) while getting “scared” by ghostly apparitions. Once again, I have to point out that if ghosts keep appearing to you, shouldn’t you be used to it by now? In the film, Joey is continually haunted for 8 straight months, with the ghosts coming faster as her pregnancy moves along. And yet, 8 months later, she’s still screaming at the sight of ghosts. Sheesh. Some people just can’t adapt.

From a directorial angle, the Pangs have certainly improved as filmmakers. “The Eye 2″ is a visually pleasing film, with a lot of intimate close-ups of Joey and attention paid to her lonely, pointless existence. Ironically, “The Eye 2″ would have worked better as a straight drama, or even a tragic love story, instead of the horror film it was billed as. More often than not, the horror elements — the falling ghosts, the now-you-see-them-now-you-don’t apparitions — feel forced and out of place. As a meditation on life, love, and Eastern spirituality, the film works.

I don’t recommend “The Eye 2″ for anyone who has seen one or two Asian Ghost Stories before, and are looking for another film to scare them. This sequel just doesn’t have what it takes to be scary; and one suspects it really doesn’t have it in itself to even try. But for anyone looking for a tour de force performance from an attractive actress, “The Eye 2″ will suffice. Qi Shu does a fantastic job, giving a performance that would be extraordinary in a straight drama. Here, she just comes across as better than the material deserves. "

Review:

" The phrase “Two minds are better than one” seems to hold sway when it comes to sibling filmmakers. Which might explain the recent boom in multiple filmmakers from the same family attached to the same film project. America boasts almost a half dozen that comes immediately to mind, with the better-known ones being the Wachowskis (”The Matrix”), the Coens (”The Man Who Wasn’t There”), and the Hughes (”From Hell”). Now Asia has contributed to this rather odd phenomenon with the Pang Brothers (”Bangkok Dangerous”), who brings us “The Eye.”

“The Eye” borrows the thrust of its plot — the ability to see dead people — from “The Sixth Sense.” In “The Eye,” the lead is Mun (Angelica Lee), a young woman blinded since 2, who receives a cornea implant and with it, the ability to see again. Unfortunately for Mun, the cornea’s former owner was a girl with psychic powers that allowed her to see dead people and a dark, silhouetted shadow that appears to guide the dead to, well, wherever it is that the dead go.

The Pang brothers (as they’re listed in the credits) wastes very little time attacking our senses with its promise of ghosts. The movie almost immediately shifts into overdrive and the first ghostly apparition appears to Mun at around the 10-minute mark, as soon as the gauze tape is removed from her new eyes. From that moment on, the ghost moments come fast and furious, with one ghost appearing after another. This might have become old real fast, except the Pangs have an uncanny ability to make every single apparition as scary as possible. I have never felt goosebumps crawl up and down my spine so many times. What’s worst (for my manhood, anyway) is that the Pangs did it to me everytime! Even after the ghosts stopped being new and became almost a daily presence, the Pangs still managed to send shivers up my spine.

The film is boasted by the perfect casting of Angelica Lee (”Princess D”) as the lead. The young actress portrays Mun with a simple honesty that makes us care for her, mostly because the Pangs are so adept at frightening us that we feel what Mun is feeling. She’s scared? Why not, we are! Lee is a newcomer, and has only done two films to date. Her performance here is nothing short of perfect, and she handles the frightening episodes and the quiet, contemplative scenes with equal skill.

Angelica Lee’s endearing presence aside, the film has a rather uninteresting supporting cast. Lawrence Chow as a Doctor is badly miscast. The actor is not only too young to convincingly hold any medical degrees (flashbacks to the teen doc TV show “Doogie Howser, M.D.” comes to mind), but he proves to be lacking in thespian ability. This makes Chow somewhat of a non-entity, especially when he’s acting opposite the shining Angelica Lee, who overwhelms him with her emotional and convincing performance.

The film moves at a quick pace at first, which leads to the movie’s one big problem — that is, the film moves much too fast for its own good. There is a feeling of too much, too soon, which left me to wonder (while watching the movie) how long it will take for the film and its creators to run out of steam. The answer: the halfway mark, where “The Eye” stops becoming a scary ghost story and instead chose to pay homage (wink wink) to the resolution plot used in M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Sixth Sense.”

Despite a familiar plot (I can recall at least a half-dozen movies and episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits” that involved transplanted bodyparts turning bad), “The Eye” is a highly effective scare film when it is content to just scare. Its ghosts are well done and appear when we least expect them, sometimes attacking Mun (and us) and sometimes just lingering with full-tilt creepiness in the background. There is a great scene involving Mun being trapped in an elevator with a ghost that is particularly harrowing. Let’s just say I’ll never feel right standing in an “empty” elevator ever again.

The Pang brothers use a variety of camera tricks, from slow pans to reveal shots, to bring the ghosts to life (in a manner of speaking). Their use of these traditional filming techniques are truly inspiring, especially since the ghost ceases to become “close and personal” when special effects get involved (which they do at various intervals). The computer effects only achieve to take the audience out of the immediate scene because it screams, “This is just a movie!” at the top of its lungs.

“The Eye” boasts a highly enjoyable and scary first half, but quickly goes downhill there after. Once the secret of the cornea’s former owner is revealed, the film ceases to be a ghost story and instead becomes a minor mystery that culminates in a rather out-of-place sequence involving fireballs and more special effects. It might have been better if the Pangs had stuck to traditional slow pans and reveal shots instead.

As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t add CGI.” "

Review:
" With just 3 films in his oeuvre (”Double Tap” and “Inner Senses” being the other two), director Chi-Leung Law is quickly proving to be one of the more talented filmmakers currently working out of the former British colony. With nifty camerawork and even niftier scene compositions, one feels almost obligated to ignore the narrative and just concentrate on the man’s visuals. Except for Johnnie To (minus the attachment of Ka-Fai Wai) there’s no one better at establishing style and mood without a single line of dialogue being spoken.

“Koma” re-teams Law with Karena Lam, the star of “Inner Senses”, here playing Ling, a young woman who may or may not be a kidney thief. With a rash of such thefts plaguing Hong Kong, suspicion falls on Ling after socialite Ching (Angelica Lee) picks her out as having been at a recent crime scene. As coincidence would have it (or is it?) it turns out Ling once had an affair with Wai (Andy Hui), Ching’s boyfriend. Things get even more muddled when it seems as if Ling is stalking Ching — but is she?

If you were expecting “Koma” to follow the standard love triangle cum “Fatal Attraction” plot, you’d be wrong. The script by Susan Chan keeps throwing curve balls at the audience, determined to keep things unpredictable at all costs. Whenever it feels as if the movie had chosen a course and was following it, the very next scene proves that assumption wrong. Doing a plot-by-lot synopsis would be terribly dull, but suffice it to say that the storyline has more than a few aces up its sleeves, and soon the two women have somehow, someway become friends.

Besides the fact that they’re sleeping with the same man, both women realize they are incomplete. For Ching it’s her health, caused by — of all the irony — a faulty kidney. She’s also neurotic about her body, her mind, and other things rich people without a job can afford to be neurotic about. For Ling, the problems are more Earthbound; her mother is in a coma and will never wake up, and Ling herself is suffering from a terrible case of unrequited love. And oh yeah, she’s really strapped for cash.

I will admit that I fell for the film’s Big Reveal, which comes at around the 70-minute mark without so much as an advance warning. Which isn’t to say all the twists and turns in “Koma” works, because on more than one occasion the word “contrived” will come up when discussing Susan Chan’s screenplay. And while the Big Reveal does explain some of the film’s more contrived moments, such as Ching and Ling’s sudden (and seemingly random) friendship, it still leaves some holes.

At its core, “Koma” works because it’s constructed from a script that allows director Chi-Leung Law to do some amazing things with his two leading ladies. The framing of “Koma” is outstanding, with each close-up as perfect as you could get. Mood, atmosphere, and tension are achieved with just the right camera perspective and solid performances from the two stars. The film is correctly called a Thriller, even though there are some odd comedic moments to lighten the mood from time to time, albeit nothing really out of place.

While Karena Lam’s stoic — and at times downright devilish — performance threatens to overshadow her co-star, Angelica Lee does hold her own here, which isn’t easy to do considering how shallow her character is written. Thin, frail, and overcompensating for her poor health and neurotic personality, Lee’s Ching is pitiful to behold. Ling is just the opposite — a self-sufficient woman who knows exactly what she wants and how to get it, except no matter how hard she tries she can’t seem to take Wai from Ching. And it grates on her, mostly because she knows that, beyond the wealth and privilege, there’s absolutely nothing special about the competition.

“Koma” is a solid Thriller all around, with enough style and substance to please most fans of the genre. Besides featuring stunning cinematography by Chi-Leung Law, the film boasts two of the best young actresses currently working in Hong Kong today, which is in itself a major bonus. “Koma” is definitely worthwhile, even if the script sometimes takes too many liberties in order to get things to where it wants to be. And where did it eventually end up? Why, the ol fire ax versus scalpel duel, of course. "
