RATING: 8/10

REVIEW:
"...Without a doubt the most eagerly anticipated flick in recent HK history, this adaptation of Ma Wing Shing’s popular comic book Fung Wan is a solidly entertaining, if somewhat hollow spectacle. Boasting the best special effects ever seen in a HK flick, this two-hour martial arts and swordplay extravaganza is basically a Zu: Warriors for the new millennium, or an HK version of Star Wars. This is an old-fashioned wuxia reframed with modern storytelling techniques. Fung Wan manages to take us to another world, which is one of the things that movies - when they’re not engaging our hearts and minds- should do...
...“Cloud is unpredictable. Wind is formless.” This line from the film pretty well describes the acting. Aaron Kwok fares the best, showing intensity and a physical presence necessary for his role as Cloud. Ekin Cheng is exceptionally bland - his acting limits are extremely apparent next to Kwok. The guy just isn’t a proper wuxia hero. It’s no wonder that Chastity was fooling around with Cloud behind Wind’s back.
Support is varied, but the numerous cameos and big-name supporting parts make up for any fault in the lead casting. Especially notable are Anthony Wong as Sword Saint, Alex Fong as Whispering Prince, and Roy Cheung in an against-type role as a Shaolin monk. Shu Qi shows up as Muse, official love interest, and she’s as winning as ever. Towering over everyone is Japanese actor Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter), who hams it up relentlessly as the power-mad Lord Conquer.
Andrew Lau and Manfred Wong do a decent job of providing summer movie fun. On the negative side, the plot is terribly convoluted and there are far too many characters. Knowledge of the comic book would probably be helpful as much of the film is guaranteed to lose the casual viewer. The much-vaunted SFX are impressive by HK standards, though they’re nothing compared to your average U.S. blockbuster. The film leans a bit too much on the effects, perhaps expecting them to carry the film where good choreography usually should. That approach yields an almost soulless product - you can practically see the potential for a Happy Meal promotion.
This is a comic book though, and it plays out exactly like one from the stunning visuals to the frankly hokey dialogue and situations. Take this major line: "With a heart as clear as ice, the sky may fall and I won't fear..." That type of contrived poetic platitude is a perfect example of what The Storm Riders is all about. It’s a lot of posturing - all sound and fury, signifying nothing. But it’s pretty cool sound and fury."

Beat

Requested by Jinu

Genre: Drama, Crime
Starring:
Jung Woo-sung as Min
Ko So-young as Romi
Lim Chang Jung as Whan
Yu Oh-seong as Tae Soo
Release year: 1997
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English (hardsub)

SYNOPSIS:
This movie follows the story of three friends in Korea, all three of whom drop out of school. The main character is Min, a tough guy whose widowed mother is a drunk. The story traces his journey from high school to the underworld as one of his friends introduces him to life in the mob. Complicating Min's life further is his romance with Romi, a girl from an upper-class family with dreams of going to a prestigious college.

RATING: ?/10

REVIEW:
Have you ever seen an Asian gangster movie? No? Well, have you ever seen any gangster movie? If the answer is Yes, then you know how this one will end because it’s simply a South Korean version of the very, very familiar “young tough rises through the criminal ranks through courage and brains and blood only to meet a bad end” storyline. It’s all been done before, and sometimes better, sometimes worst. “Beat” is not the worst of the lot, but it’s not the best of the lot by a long shot.

There are some things about “Beat” that lends itself to being liked. The movie is very fast-paced and moves through many years in the lives of a small group of intimate characters, so there are revelations, changes, and a constant sea of turmoil taking place. Nothing ever really stands still, like life itself. Things are always happening, the world is always changing, and you’ll never be bored.

That being said, “Beat” does little except not bore its viewer. For one, the story is tried and true and been done to death. In homage to its American counterparts, the director even namedrops Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas”. So it’s no surprise that “Beat” doesn’t break any new grounds. In fact, the only thing it adds to the young-gangster-on-the-rise-only-to-be-doomed premise is the addition of the very South Korean tradition of taking the state college
level entrance exam. One character, a friend
of the female lead, does so poorly on the college entrance exam that instead of facing her parents, she flings herself in front of an oncoming train. The female lead, Romi, is so traumatize that she goes insane and has to be committed for a couple of years.
As I said, it’s all been done before, but at least it’s very entertaining this go-round.

SYNOPSIS:
Seoul has been struck by a series of mean-spirited attacks targeting high school heartthrobs, with rocker Ye Sung and basketball player Han Geng among the victims. Studious, bespectacled Ki Bum and breakdancing buddy Dong Hae decide to investigate. Rather than searching for the culprit, however, they're a lot more interested in finding the next target. Meanwhile, the three potential victims are also competing against each other for top pin-up boy status and the fame that comes with it.

RATING: 8/10

REVIEW:
"...That sure is a crazy set-up and the movie did a good of job playing off that crazinesses. There probably should have been a disclaimer in the beginning of the film, stating something along the lines of “Warning! Humor is incredibly low-brow, brain damage may occur!”. Even with that low brow type of humor, I did find the movie to be absolutely hilarious at times. There were at least four or five laugh out loud funny moments in the film and one such moment took me by such surprise that I ended up slobbering all over myself. Oops.

I didn’t think I would ever say this about a Korean film, but my biggest complaint about “Attack on the Pin-up Boys” would be that the film was just too short. Only 81 minutes long, but feels even shorter because the final five minutes consists of a closing song & dance sequence. Furthermore, as good as the setup of the movie was, the film resolved itself way too easily. A simple “aha…it was you?” kind of moment revealed the entire mystery behind the poo thrower – somewhere around the hour mark into the film. I did have to wonder to myself if the filmmakers were short on money and maybe that’s why they concluded the film in such a brisk and simplistic manner.

With that stated, there are still a lot of positive things about “Attack on the Pin-up Boys”. The set-up is entirely unique and the film is able to successfully bring to light how absurd celebrity status can really be. The film also brings into play other current hot topics that younger people can relate to : social networks, internet and the desire for peer acceptance. “Attack on the Pin-up Boys” certainly won’t make you re-evaluate the meaning of life, but it will provide for at least an hour of laughs and intrigue. It’s just to bad the film resolved itself so quickly, otherwise “Attack on the Pin-up Boys” would have been one of the better cult films for this year. Oh well, you still have a darn funny movie…for at least an hour. "

Beautiful Boxer

Genre: Drama
Starring: Asanee Suwan, Sorapong Chatree
Release year: 2003
Language: Thai
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Based on the true story of Thailand's famed transgender kickboxer, Parinya Charoenphol. Believing he's a girl trapped in a boy's body since childhood, Parinya Charoenphol (affectionately known as Nong Toom in Thailand) sets out to master the most masculine and lethal sport of Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) to earn a living and to achieve his ultimate goal of total femininity. Nong Toom life goes from his teenage years as a traveling monk, to grueling days in boxing camps, to explosive matches where he knocks out most of his opponents across Thailand and Japan.

RATING: ?/10

REVIEW:
"...The amazing Asanee Suwan stars in the extremely challenging role of Nong Toom Parinya Charoenphol, a teenage transvestite who somewhat reluctantly kickboxes his way to fame and fortune in order to help out his impoverished family and save up for gender reassignment surgery. That’s a lot for one movie to tackle, but Beautiful Boxer cheerily accommodates everything: the family struggles, the Buddhism, the sexual identity crisis, the training, the fighting, and the lip gloss...
...Production notes explain that Suwan was hired for his formidable kickboxing skills and was then subjected to a year-long course in beauty, poise, dance, and general transvestism to get him ready for the role. His hard work pays off big time. He’s outstanding in the role, both in the ring, where he’s a terrifying force (the fight scenes are fantastic), and outside it, where his wide eyes and shy smile have a girlish flirtatiousness and his classical Thai dance is elegant and graceful.
Though the movie puts forth plenty of clichés — Be Who You Are! Never Give Up! Work Hard for Your Dreams! — they’re woven neatly into the gritty story and gently tinted with interesting Buddhist teachings that give the film its unique texture.
Beautiful Boxer is a trip to Thailand well worth taking. You’ll be on Toom’s side all the way through, and that’s a good thing. You certainly wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of his avenging foot..."

Undercover

Genre: Crime, Drama
Starring: Shawn Yue, Sam Lee, Monie Tung, Ben Ng, Ken Tong
Release year: 2007
Language: Cantonese
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Feng (Shawn Yue) is a former undercover cop whose post-assignment life has begun to rapidly disintegrate. Feng and former triad brother Fai (Sam Lee of Gen-X Cops) are caught using cocaine, and the ensuing melee leaves a police detective dead, with Fai fingered as the culprit. Fai must go on the run, but he no longer trusts Feng, who he believes may be leveraging their brotherhood for advancement in the police ranks. Feng has no desire to see Fai caught, and begins a desperate search for him, leading to a confrontation with his bloodthirsty former gang, as well as a reunion with club girl Sandy (Monie Tung of Whispers and Moans), his girlfriend while undercover. With the cops hot on the trail, Feng has to find Fai fast, or both of their lives will be forfeit. Meanwhile, the discovery of a months-old corpse may prove to have some connection to both Feng and Fai.

RATING: 7.5/10

REVIEW:
"...For the most part the proceedings are kept admirably gritty, and Chung wrings plenty of suspense out of Feng’s increasingly desperate attempts to stay one step ahead of his colleagues and the circling gangster-vultures. There is a constant air of mistrust, with most of the cast being engaged in one form of deception or another, and to an extent this forces the viewer to experience the growing paranoia of the protagonist. Needless to say, the film is all very macho, with plenty of brooding and regrets at brotherhood
turned sour, and with the sole female role predictably being that of a club girl / prostitute called Sandy (played by Monie Tung, recently in Herman Yau’s “Whispers and Moans”) who turns up only as another reminder of Feng’s past and to give the relationship between the male leads a not unexpected twist.

Undercover (2007) Movie ReviewThe film has a grainy look which gives it a gritty edge throughout, as does Chung’s oddly sinister use of colour and the discordant soundtrack. Although there is perhaps a little too much in the way of slow motion, the visuals are fairly impressive, with just about enough style to help distract from the lack of originality. Most importantly, Chung manages to keep things brief and brisk, and despite plenty of angst and shoe-gazing, with a running time of less than an hour and a half, the film never outstays its tenuous welcome. Although there isn’t really much action, there is an effective atmosphere of violence and a few moments of brutality, including an excruciating finger smashing scene (though this loses some of its impact when just a few minutes later the character seems strangely uninjured) and the usual assortment of beatings and stabbings.

To really make a mark in such an overcrowded field as this requires something special, and whilst “Undercover” doesn’t quite achieve this, it does manage to tick all the right boxes, and is on par with other similar recent releases such as Herman Yau’s “On the Edge”. Well directed and acted, the film benefits from a resolutely immoral and non-judgemental take on the subject matter which allows it to stand out from the crowd somewhat, enough so to make it entertaining viewing for fans of the form or anyone after a dark, edgy thriller. Aeja

a.k.a Goodbye Mom

Genre: Drama
Starring: Kang-hee Choi, Yeong-ae Kim, Su-bin Bae, Yeong-nam Jang, Il-hwa Choi
Release year: 2009
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Aeja (Kang-hee Choi) was once a promising student. Not only did she do well in school, she also loved to write poetry on rainy days & also possessed excellent fighting skills. Her dream was to become a novelist and a few years later she moved to Seoul to fulfill those dreams.

Aeja is now 29 years old and has not achieved any of the success she has hoped for. Her only accomplishment to date is winning an award from a local newspaper organziation. Meanwhile, Aeja's personal life is not much better off. Her boyfriend cheated on her and eventually ran off leaving behind large amounts of debt. Aeja was nearly pushed to the edge, but then channels her energy into a writing contest that offers a large reward.

While writing for the contest Aeja receives a message from her mother asking her to come back to Busan for her brother's wedding. Aeja's mother has always been tough on her and when she goes back to Busan her mother treats her no different. Then one day, Aeja's mother suddenly collapses and her world starts shaking from the seams.

RATING: 8.5/10

REVIEW:
Choi Kang-hee ("My Scary Girl") brings to the screen another atypical heroine, the tomboy Ae-ja. Her outmoded name, which undoubtedly invited much teasing at school when she was young, sums up the small battles she must fight in everyday life. The movie begins with the baby-faced actress posing most naturally as a rebellious high school student.

An epitome of paradox, she is the best and the worst of students - though always ranking on top, the dreamy poet constantly walks into trouble as she gets caught smoking, cuts class on rainy days to write prose by the beach and makes midnight phone calls to her teacher after indulging in underage drinking. The only person who can restrain this untamed "Tolstoy of Busan" is her charismatic mother, Yeong-heui, played by veteran actress Kim Yeong-ae.

The two sharp-tongued Busan women are constantly gnawing at each other, with Ae-ja complaining of her mother's biased affections for her older brother who gets to study abroad.

Ten years later, Ae-ja, 29, is settled in Seoul but is still wrestling with words as a penniless aspiring novelist and getting into trouble. All she has is an unimpressive resume adorned by an insignificant literary prize, a cheating boyfriend and petty arguments with her arch-nemesis mother.

Ae-ja is beckoned back home for her brother's wedding. But the family event is far from being warm and cuddly. Always feeling like the ugly duckling, Ae-ja cries "it's unfair" when mom sells real estate to finance her "spoiled" brother's company while she nags her about getting a real job.

Just when Ae-ja gets her sweet revenge by virtually ruining the ceremony with a crude joke, though, Yeong-heui collapses. But the film refrains from taking a sappy melodramatic turn. Ae-ja does not mature overnight just because her mom has cancer; the idea of her feisty mother dying eludes her and she rather reluctantly becomes her caretaker.

The two are biting and barking at each other as always, though this time small fights involve using needles and painkillers properly. However, time and circumstances have inevitably changed, and Ae-ja finds herself becoming the nagger rather than the nagged.

There have been hyper-realistic dramas about love-hate mother-and-daughter relationships such as "Mayonnaise", starring "Mother - 2009" heroine Kim Hye-ja opposite the late Choi Jin-sil. "Ae-ja" continues the tradition of offering vivid characters and subtle nuances and dynamics of relationships.

The film keeps things somewhat lighter with playful theatrical interventions, but the movie is, of course, aimed at tugging the viewer's heartstrings. The use of sappy violin music is clich?, but Kang and Kim offer the finest tearjerker performances and the camera keeps a surprisingly cool distance from the sentimentality, allowing the viewer to overlook the artifice.

She lives with her mother Mi-sook (Lee Mi-suk), who is widowed. Mother and daughter share a close and intimate relationship, and Mi-sook wishes for Min-ah to experience all aspects of life, including first love. Mi-nah’s quiet life it’s about to change when young photographer Young-jae (Kim Rae-won) move in downstairs. Fresh and innocent as it is – first love story with great soundtrack.

RATING: ?/10

REVIEW:

"...With such a small cast, the burden of the film's success lies primarily on the film's three principals, and the actors acquit themselves quite well in their respective roles. As the focus of attention, Im Soo-Jung delivers a memorable performance as Min-Ah. And although they do have some highly charged emotional scenes, Lee Mi-Sook and Kim Rae-Won bring a welcome amount of comic relief to the proceedings, which in itself, is another positive of the film. Rather than bog down the narrative with the kinds of hefty emotional baggage generally associated with the genre, the filmmakers instead use humor as a more natural way to get the audience to identify and/or sympathize with their characters. In fact, part of what makes …ing a solid film experience is that if the terminal illness aspect were eliminated altogether, what remains - a story about a shy, reclusive girl falling in love with an outgoing young man - would sustain a film in and of itself. And considering the plethora of "terminal illness tearjerkers" plaguing the market these days, part of me wishes that element actually was excised from the film. But still, as far as these things go, this is a topnotch melodrama.
One of the more innovative aspects of the film is that the plot doesn't rely solely on the romance element, but instead gives equal, if not more time, to the unconventional mother-daughter relationship. Because Min-Ah was deprived of friends her own age due to her constant trips to the hospital, her mother asks to be called by her first name, becoming, in effect, Min-Ah's "best friend" from an early age. But even so, the way in which the two characters interact as mother and daughter comes across rather realistically, and Mi Sook's occasional deadpan "revelations" to her daughter always make for entertaining comic digressions..."

Thanks to Joon, a love messenger, they become slowly aware of true meaning of family...

RATING: 7.5/10

REVIEW:
"...Again, what works well here is the fact that director Cho Nam Ho allows things to play out naturally, and in a pleasingly low-key fashion. Na Rae does become a more intriguing figure during the course of the film, mainly since if anything she only grows less pleasant, taking out her frustrations on the rest of the cast through a series of genuinely nasty acts. Although Gan Nan doesn’t get too much screen time and is really only used as a plot device to keep Jun at the house, at least her senility is not used for cheap laughs, something which has proved quite distasteful in similarly themed films. All three women turn in effective performances, especially Shim Hye Jin, who to an extent carries the film, and Lee Da Hee, who does well with an awkward role.

As a result, although the plot itself is essentially fluff, the characters draw the viewer into the story, and distract from its inherent predictability. To be fair, Cho seems to be aiming more for human drama rather than narrative complexity, and on that score the film certainly succeeds, more than making up for with genuine warmth what it lacks in depth. Largely free of melodrama and cheap sentiment, it is actually quite moving in places, often in less obvious ways than might have been expected – until, of course, the inevitable cathartic emotional outpourings of the final scenes.

Cho’s direction is suitably laid back and remarkably assured for a first time helmer, and he keeps the film grounded, aside from a few ill-advised bursts of surreal imagery, presumably designed to be cute. The film has a bright, though realistic look, and whilst the bouncy soundtrack can be a bit annoying at times, it does help to give the proceedings a distinctly upbeat feel. Although he does inject a few laughs here and there, most of which are generally quite winning, he never lets things get too comical, and as such manages to maintain a sense of believable drama. Best of all, he has the good sense to keep things uncluttered, avoiding the trap so many other films of this kind fall into by eschewing the usual onslaught of flashbacks and musical montages. Clocking in at just over an hour and a half, the film is all the better for being fast moving and efficient, never wallowing or trying to overdo the emotional scenes.

As such, whilst undeniably a chick flick, and therefore most likely to be enjoyed by fans of the form or the cast, “Delivering Love” certainly stands as a superior example of the form and as a competent piece of film making
in its own right. All the more effective for its dignity and sense of restraint, it delivers everything required of the genre without falling prey to any of its more tawdry excesses. "

Princess Aurora

Genre: Thriller, Crime, Suspense
Starring:
Sung-keun Moon …. Detective Oh Sung-ho
Jeong-hwa Eom …. Jung Soon-jung
Oh-jung Kwon …. Detective Jung
Release year: 2005
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
When a woman is killed in a department store, the authorities hope that it's an isolated incident, but two days later, another homicide occurs. This time around, a woman is suffocated to death. And thus, a series of murders start to take place in Kangnam, a high class neighborhood in Seoul. The only clue left behind at the crime scene is a children's sticker, depicting the cartoon character "Princess Aurora." Oh, a veteran detective in the violent crimes division, who believes that the beautiful Jung Sun Jung is the real culprit behind this terrible killing spree. However, Detective Oh knows more than he lets on, as he neglects to tell anyone in the department, including his partner, that Sun Jung is his ex-wife! If she's really the killer, what's her motivation? And will Oh be able to bring her to justice?

RATING: 8.5/10

REVIEW:
"...What keeps “Princess Aurora” from slipping into cheap exploitation is measured direction by first-time writer/director Eun-jin Bang (“301/302″), a former actress who shows good command of the cinematic tools at her disposal. The film’s only real shocking moment comes early, when Soon-jung ferociously pounce her victim in the mall bathroom. And while the rest of “Aurora” is nowhere near as bloody, that initial burst of shocking violence sets the stage for the movie’s unpredictable nature, as if Bang is telling us that anyone, at anytime, can become one of Soon-jung’s victim. The fact that Bang refuses to give us quick answers as to why these people are being targeted makes the mystery all the more engaging.

The primary reason why “Princess Aurora” works as well as it does is because of the tour de force performance of star Jeong-hwa Eom (“Mr. Handy”), who continues to prove herself an amazingly versatile actress. Eom’s Soon-jung is a woman filled with rage, but you wouldn’t know it to look at her. The exterior façade that she allows others to see in public hides seething anger, uncontrolled violence, and most of all, a shattered soul. She is, without question, a destroyed woman trying to take as many of those responsible with her as she can before the inevitable end. All the credit in the world goes to Jeong-hwa Eom, who singularly carries, as well as make “Princess Aurora” more than the material.

This brings us to the script, which is excellent when it focuses entirely on Soon-jung’s quest, but falters when it has to bring others into Soon-jung’s world. There’s “Tube” star Oh-jung Kwon’s Detective Jung, who is initially written to be a major part of the story, but ends up doing little more than running about in the background. Also open to debate is the South Korean police’s seemingly ludicrous policies. When it’s revealed that Oh is the ex-husband of a serial killer still at large, Oh’s superiors have no qualms about letting him remain an active participant in the investigation. And then there’s a gratuitous sex scene early in the film that seems to be entirely devoid of any purpose whatsoever.

Overall, “Princess Aurora” is one of the better cop thrillers you’ll find out of South Korea at the moment. It’s not a procedural in the traditional sense, and if anything the film seems clueless about real police work. Not that it matters, because writer/director Eun-jin Bang has fashioned a fantastic debut film buoyed by a powerhouse performance from star Jeong-hwa Eom as the film’s serial killer with a cause. In a year of mediocre romantic comedies, derivative ghost stories, and tedious melodramas, it’s a wonder the Koreans still know how to make such an effective and entertaining thriller, much less two in the same year — Bang’s “Princess Aurora” and Park’s “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”."

Honesty

Genre: Comedy, Romance
Starring: Richie Jen, Cecilia Cheung
Release year: 2003
Language: Cantonese
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
Ren is that guy- overly-benevolent veterinarian Moses- who stands to inherit a US$25 million fortune. When nightclub hostess learns of the fortune, she tries her hardest to win his affections- and his money- with her womanly wiles. But she has to also contend with competition from Moses’ unscrupulous nephew Barry and fiancee Mimi who are after a bit of spending money for themselves.

RATING: 7/10

REVIEW:
"...So what is? Well, if you're a fan of Cecilia Cheung, you really can't go wrong with Honesty. Cheung may look like the poster child for anorexia, but she's also naturally lovely and a deceptively good actress. Her ability to handle the more serious emotions in her characters is a rare one among Hong Kong actresses. When asked to show inner emotion, Cheung is one of the best Hong Kong has. Unfortunately, Honesty is a comedy, which means most of the time she has to squeal, squirm, and act unconvincingly sassy. Cheung may be incredibly cute, but she's not so great at acting cute.
But who are we kidding? Does anyone really care how Cecilia Cheung acts in this film? Probably not. In all likelihood, the red-blooded males of the world only care how she looks—and she looks great. Skinny, yes, but great. She also parades around in nosebleed-inducing costumes, including a school uniform and various navel-revealing tight ensembles. If that's what you're here for then you'll go home happy.
As for the other actors, Richie Ren is admirably self-deprecating, and the various co-stars (Chapman To and Raymond Wong are amusing) certainly distract. It's not like the actors could really do much with such a fluffy script anyway. This is a time-killing fluff-fest, pure and simple. Nobody should tune in here for real emotion and actual creativity. This is pop-star eye-candy and time-filling wacky stuff, and those who are big fans of this sort of weightless star vehicle could find themselves entertained..."

Bodyguards and Assassins

Genre: Action, History, Martial Art
Starring: Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Nicholas Tse, Li Yuchun, Wang Xueqi, Hu Jun, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Eric Tsang, Simon Yam, Fan Bingbing, Cung Le, Zhou Yun
Release year: 2009
Language: Mandarin
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
In 1905, Sun Yat-sen (called "Sun Wen" in the film) intends to come to Hong Kong (then a colony of the British Empire) to discuss his plans for revolution with fellow Tongmenghui members to overthrow the corrupt and crumbling Qing Dynasty. Empress Dowager Cixi sends a group of assassins led by Yan Xiaoguo to kill Sun. Revolutionary Chen Shaobai arrives in Hong Kong a few days before Sun's arrival, to meet Li Yutang, a businessman who provides financial aid for the revolutionaries. As Sun Wen's arrival day draws near, trouble begins brewing in Hong Kong as Chen Shaobai's acquaintances are murdered and Chen himself is kidnapped by the assassins during a raid. Li Yutang decides to officially declare his support for the revolutionaries after the newspaper agency is closed by the British authorities, who maintain a policy of laissez-faire towards China's political situation. Li rallies a group of men, including rickshaw pullers, hawkers and a beggar, to serve as bodyguards for Sun Wen when he arrives. Li's son Li Chongguang is chosen to act as a decoy for Sun Wen to divert the assassins away while Sun attends the meeting and leaves Hong Kong safely.

RATING: 9/10

REVIEW:
Donnie Yen – an obvious choice because of his Ip Man fame. Wang Xueqi – an experienced Mainland Chinese actor who anchors the film. Tony Leung Ka Fai – he provides the affirmative weight to the cast chemistry. Nicholas Tse – another opportunity to hone his acting skills. Hu Jun – another Mainland actor who is increasingly popular with the masses, Eric Tseng – a familiar Hong Kong face always helps. Li Yuchun – a very popular singer in Mainland China would definitely boost the market. Fan Bing Bing – an obligatory pretty face from Mainland China to soften the mood. Mengke Bateer – the professional basketball player from Inner Mongolia would help to pull in some fans too.

The list doesn’t stop here. We’ve also got other notable names like Leon Lai, Simon Yam, Jacky Cheung, Michelle Reis and Zhang Hanyu (in cameo roles which are essentially important to the story) in the mix. Indeed, listing all these actors down almost seems like an exhausting task – imagine what the casting director went through to pin down the cast?

The pro Chinese story works for the production too: Revolutionary leader Sun Yat Sen is arriving in Hong Kong, and the politically dangerous trip requires a group of patriotic bodyguards who will go all out to protect the man. And it is with this, the 138 minute movie is played out nicely like an action adventure.

The impressive production values will awe you – Huge sets, magnificent cinematography, rhythmic editing, engaging action choreography, decent computer effects and emotionally charged music score are all part of the equation to this recommended movie. Sure, the storyline isn’t really considered innovative, but the pompousness of a production like this doesn’t need anything more.

Action fans would be pleased to know that there are some memorable sequences showcasing Yen’s agile moves, all adrenaline charged. Lai gets to be part of the fun too, but the Heavenly King’s character design is just too awkwardly distracting to hold ground. Celebrity Li’s foray is decent, as she turns in an affecting performance as a revolutionary’s daughter who gets involved in the turmoil. Other actors like Tse, Leung and Hu may have to resort to makeup antics like scars and blood to capture the audience’s attention, but being capable and respectable actors already, this doesn’t come off as exploitative.

If there’s one name to look out for during the award season, it has to be 63 year old Wang’s winning performance as a merchant. Note to budding artistes: This is called acting. Every subtle facial expression, eye movement or hand gesture is indicative of the experienced actor’s skill to bring out the intricate personality of the character. Though not a key scene of the movie, watch out for the sequence where the wealthy merchant agrees to propose on behalf of Tse’s rickshaw puller character. Through some simple exchange of words and actions, this scene stands out as the most poignantly moving portion of the movie.

Genre: Action, Martial Art, Mystery, Adventure
Starring: Jay Chou, Lin Chiling, Chen Daoming, Eric Tsang, Miao Pu, River Chen, Will Liu, Kenneth Tsang
Release year: 2009
Language: Mandarin
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:
In the northwest desert where countless prosperous dynasties have flourish and fallen, there is rumour of a buried treasure of unbelievable riches. A group of mysterious guardians have kept the map to the location of the treasure safe, until a fierce rivalry erupts. A notorious international crime group, The Company hunt down the map keepers and before they manage to secure it, the keeper passes the map to a young chivalrous man Ciao Fei (Jay Chou). Ciao Fei is forced to give up the map to save the live of his mentor's daughter Lan Ting (Lin Chi Ling). Teaming up with Hua Ding Bang (a famous archaeologist) and Lan Ting they embark on a dangerous journey to recover the map and fight to protect the ancient treasure.

RATING: 6.5/10

REVIEW:
"...With a script-writing team consisting no less than five writers and supervised by the acclaimed Ivy Ho, the lackluster script is a gleaming example of why too many cooks spoiled the soup. Plotlines that seem important one minute, disappear the next and many characters float in and out without apparently any substantial reason to be there.

Some are simply setup to fight against our dear Qiaofeng for example Will Liu Geng Hong’s character and River Chen who plays the mysterious yet laughable 'Eagle of the Desert'. Of course Chiling is the damsel in distress cum love interest, Eric Tsang provides comic relief and Mainland actor Chen Daoming like his onscreen character seems entirely detached from the whole movie. Miao Pu is the only actress in this movie that excites our senses with her somewhat similar facial features to a certain megastar, Michelle Yeoh.

Our man, Jay Chou of course is at his usual self playing the aloofness hero who can’t determine he likes Lan Ting or not. His character is the combination of both Indiana Jones and Rick O’ Connell (from The Mummy) but lacks the charm and wits of both. Perhaps it’s the truckload of mushy and uninteresting dialog that kills the chemistry between Chou and Chiling but top model and squeaky-voiced Lin Chiling in her second cinematic outing after "Red Cliff" passes off nothing more as a 'beautiful actress' to ogle at.

So what’s left in this Kevin Chu’s movie is the rated 'A' production values that is simply on par with any decent Hollywood’s output. Watch out for the 'Inn & Beer' seen in the beginning, the 'Traveller’s Village' and the finale set design which are visual enriching. The lush cinematography and the score by our local Ricky Ho really help to kill the time too. Tony Ching’s action choreography on the other hand is disappointing with plenty of unnecessary slow-mo shots and wirefu works that worked better in the decade old "The Matrix" or the next Jay Chou’s MTV.

2009 is a quiet year for Chinese productions. Unless you are a die-hard fan of Jay Chou or one who hug a photo of Chiling to bed on a nightly basis, I doubt you find "The Treasure Hunter" a worthy movie to end the year on a high note."
