Avoiding the police, he hides in the apartment of blind young woman Michiro (Tanaka Rena). At first Michiro doesn’t aware that there is someone else in the apartment. Akihiro quietly assists in her daily life, and Michiro gradually realizes that there is someone else in her home. In that small and quiet apartment, a unique romance begins to bloom.

" Although I enjoyed the manner in which the movie unfolded with its unique storyline, I did find the pacing of Waiting In The Dark to be unnecessarily slow. Also, if some of the critical plot twists were not so hard to believe I do think this movie would have been very memorable. Instead, Waiting In The Dark is an interesting film that will probably pique your interests if you are able to endure the very slow pacing of the film. "

Kabei Our Mother

SYNOPSIS:
Set in Tokyo in 1940, the peaceful life of the Nogami Family suddenly changes when the father, Shigeru, is arrested and accused of being a Communist. His wife Kayo works frantically from morning to night to maintain the household and bring up her two daughters with the support of Shigeru’s sister Hisako and Shigeru’s ex-student Yamazaki, but her husband does not return. WWII breaks out and casts dark shadows on the entire country, but Kayo still tries to keep her cheerful determination, and sustain the family with her love. This is an emotional drama of a mother and an eternal message for peace.

" Two hours into the film (don’t worry, Yamada provides the viewer with sufficient moments of gravity and levity to tide you along), he slaps you with what I can only describe as “the sting”. All that you have assumed to be what the story was about—an innocent man wrenched from his faithful wife and daughters – now suddenly points to one of the family helpers. Someone you have hitherto taken for granted is now thrown into an unexpected twist of fate.

At this point, something curious happened in the theatre I was in. Everyone started sobbing with little or no inhibition.

“My word!” I muttered under my breath. It struck me then that “Kabei”, in the final analysis, was more than a film about a family torn apart by an empire on the verge of war. It was, in fact, a cunning examination of one common human foible: How little we cared about the secret feelings of people who are closest to us.

Now, the most common criticism made about the film was that it was technically solid, but lacked innovation. That’s what happens when reviewers put on their proverbial thinking cap, I guess. With Kabei, I believe Yoji Yamada knew exactly what trick he was going to employ to touch on one unique aspect of humanity. A wicked old trick he so seamlessly applied in the Tora-san series, and later, in Tasogare Sebei.

After lulling the audience into a sort of narrative comfort zone, he throws us into a realm of emotions rarely explored in cinema.

This, to me, is the most effective cinematic tool of all. One which avoids detection, but affects you deeply. And proof of its effectiveness was a thousand wet pieces of Kleenex, thrown into a litterbin just outside of that thousand-seater cinema hall.

Now if only some reviewers would resist being so caught up with being smart that they forget what cinema is really about. Human emotions. Pure and simple. "

Tattoo artist Takeko keeps a framed design of the spider lily flower on the wall of her parlor. The design was literally cut from the flesh of her father, after he was crushed to death in an earthquake. The image of the spider lily tattoo is the last cohesive memory of Takeko's traumatized brother, Ching, who is no longer able to recognize anyone, including his sister. Takeko has the same tattoo of the poisonous flower on her body in the hope of helping Ching remember and bridging the gap between them.

Webcam girl Jade visits Takeko's tattoo parlor, looking for sexy decoration to excite her clientele. Entranced by the tattoo of the spider lily on the wall, Jade gives Takeko her business card and invites her to visit her on her website where she professes her love for the tattoo artist. Finally, Jade asks Takeko to give her the same spider lily tattoo to bring her closer to the object of her desire…

" Taiwanese lesbian director Zero Chou's latest film, Spider Lilies (Ci qing), seems on the surface to be light and music video-like, with its bright colors, cybersex story line and tattoos. But this film, which won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the Berlin Film Festival, is actually quite an intense story about the impact of trauma on the lives of two women and their families. It is currently screening at a number of gay film festivals in the United States.
All this being said, I did enjoy this intense film and appreciated its unique story line. With film festivals full of coming-out stories, girl-meets-girl tales and lesbians-considering-children films, it's great to have a film where, as in Takeko's case, sexuality is important to the plot but is explored in tandem with other aspects of a character's psychology and history.
Chou has created a moving, intense and convincing love story with Spider Lilies..."

Kei is one such ‘sparrow’ – and a very professional one at that. He and his three partners earn a good living from digging deep into the pockets of oblivious passers-by moving along the crowded urban canyons of Hong Kong. As far as Kei’s concerned, it’s all he needs to live a carefree life. Whenever he is not going about his business he loves to ride about the city on his bicycle photographing street scenes with his Rolleiflex camera. One day the gorgeous Chun Lei comes into his sights. Kei is fascinated. But behind Chun Lei’s good looks lurks a mysterious past. Kei falls in love with her – and he is not the only one. After having managed to turn the heads of his three colleagues, she reveals her true intentions. The sparrows are to steal a key that is of great importance to her. At first the task seems simple. But then another interested party appears on the scene in the shape of shy tycoon Mr Yen...

" It’s quintessentially a love story that comes as breezy as a chance encounter, leaving nothing forced (unlike many cringe worthy romance flick that always choke romance down audience’s throat). But then again, it’s about delicate manipulation and deception among a bunch of pickpockets. The best part about Sparrow would be how the Director and his collaborators managed to merger both settings together to form a memorable love story.

Without over dramatizing the human emotions, Sparrow was effective in pulling out the different facets of love. From the luring attraction of the first encounter that set the heart fluttering, the foolish moments of the love struck and finally to the ultimate acts of sacrifice, are delicately described in this movie.

However, it’s not lovey dovey all the way as Sparrow touches on the ambiguity of human that weave a bland of noir feeling about it. Kelly Lin shines as the mysterious woman who charms effortlessly into the hearts of men with questionable jobs. Her portrayal of a frail helpless woman who is undeterred in seeking resolution for her dilemma was as joyful to watch as Simon Yam’s performance.

Simon Yam had once again subtly slipped in another fine performance for Director Johnnie To after so many collaborations. There isn’t any emotional scene for him but he captures viewer’s heart with his restrain charms. Why on earth has Simon Yam not received more acting awards for his acting performance? The last one that he gotten an award for was during PTU and let’s hope that he will received another one for his performance in Sparrow.

Captivating Actors aside, this movie relies heavily on it’s soundtrack and cinematography to deliver this “moody” piece of work. “Moody” in the sense that it does not mean grumpy but the type of emotional delights that it set the viewers in than impressing with the intricate of the plotting and showmanship.

The amazing soundtracks by Fred Avril & Xavier Jamaux are pretty much the soul of this film if Kelly Lin and Simon Yam represent the bodies. The catchy beats from the jazz mixed with a distinct bland of oriental tunes, resulting in a light hearted sexy sensual smooth mood that easily to fall for.

It’s coupled with great cinematic that is like a cinematic love letter to the city of Hong Kong. With an eye for the iconic features that define Hong Kong, this majestic sweeping viewpoint actually transform the busy city into a city that’s as lovely as Paris itself, helping to create the lovely feeling in the air.

Sparrow is a simple story that ultimately relies on the story teller, the soundtracks and cinematic angles to create atmospheric medium to fall in love with. Not everyone falls in love the same way but if you happen to like whimsical spontaneous chain of events and don’t relies on cringe worthy manner to tell you that love is in the air, Sparrow might just steal your heart. "

Silk

Armed with a newly invented material called the Menger Sponge, a team of scientists led by Hashimoto captures the energy of a ghost child.

Reluctant at first, Ye himself haunted by guilt, struggling from within on how to let his own dying mother go, accepts the assignment, perhaps, to seek salvation from what the ghost child may reveal about life, and life after death. Ye sees a single strand of silk connected from the ghost to a mysterious power. Tracking the strand of silk, Ye learns the horrifying truth of the child's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous, the team decides to isolate the ghost but in doing so they unknowingly unleashed the mysterious source on the other end of the silk strand, a much more powerful and ferocious energy.

" The fright factors in this movie are a mixed bag. There are some intense moments where this reviewer’s pulse raced, often becoming enthralled with the character’s risky encounters with ghouls. Then, there are some moments where it just felt too comical: a ghost coming out from a beef noodle bowl? That scene just doesn’t cut it as a decent frightful moment at all and felt like a lame spoof of Ringu (The Ring). It also seems that after the classic Japanese supernatural horror, Ringu, all victims of Asian supernatural horrors have to die with the same contorted look on the face that is just getting tiresome.

The technology of “Menger Sponge” which is used in this film to trap the ghost child’s energy is not extremely impressive nor does the film delve too much into any form of its operation. In ways, it felt like it’s a homage to the good old days of Hong Kong Vampire flicks that uses talisman and black dog blood to tell its spooky tale. For the main purpose of “Menger Sponge” in Silk, it is to bridge the communication and interaction between the humans and the netherworld to tell a tale of “what if?” in heartwarming proportion (that is if your heart does not cease from operation after all those intense moments)

Besides the emotional tale of the ghouls, the subplot of Detective Ye, his unconscious mom who is dying and estranged old love, brews into satisfying fruition of touching moments between lovers and family members at the climactic ends. There are times where we wish to communicate with the departed but there is simply no way of doing it in reality. Only in movies are we offered a peek of what could be the last possible message that the recent departed wants to say.

In the beginning of this year, I caught a Taiwanese supernatural horror, The Heirloom which bored me to tears. I had almost written all Asian supernatural horror off until Chang Chen’s Silk came along and resuscitated my faith in Taiwanese films. While Silk handlings of fright moments were uneven at times, the heart of the story and the way it was delivered kept me engaged through all. "

There, he is paired up with Inspector Wong (Ekin Cheng), a police veteran who explains that MAD's role is to answer supernatural calls. Wong explains MAD's rule number one: there are no ghosts. For every seemingly inexplicable phenomenon, there is a corresponding scientific and rational explanation. MAD begins investigating a string of bizarre teenage suicides. As Lee and Wong follow the clues, they realise something sinister is heading their way...

" What I do like about his movies, each one of them, is how he grips you right from the start. How it develops then on is a different tale, but his introductions are nothing short of mesmerizing. Here, he demolishes all preconceived notions you have when watching a movie, and warns you of sorts about the experience you’re going to go through with Rule #1, that is, to throw all assumptions out of the window. In fact, the opening scenes were frantic and leaves you just enough to continue questioning in which direction the movie will propel itself forward.

And thankfully, it made all the right moves, despite momentarily lapses in succumbing to cheap scares that don’t really add much value to the movie. Yes, we know how Kelvin crafts scenes that will send shivers down your spine until the crescendo (even Men in White‘s introduction had shades of this), and they all work here too, except that I thought that they were a little unnecessary except to anchor the movie in the land of the supernatural. It’s central plot doesn’t become clear until midway through the movie, and from then on it lunges to a higher plateau at breakneck speed, with the audience probably second and triple guessing themselves all the way to the finale, with flashbacks at times becoming a little too spelt out for good...

...Sure there are familiar shades from movies like Fallen and Suicide Club, and a lot of “waking up” moments, but they never did once mar my enjoyment of the movie as it went along. Rule #1 had enough suspenseful moments to thrill, and Kelvin Tong seemed very assured to be in familiar grounds of horror. Those expecting an all out fright-fest may be slightly disappointed as it turns on the supernatural spin a lot more than the boo-moments, and fans of local actress Fiona Xie will find that their television darling still got relegated to a flower vase role in a one-dimensional performance, despite this being her second movie outing (after One Leg Kicking). Here she plays the dutiful girlfriend to Sergeant Lee, and that’s about it, being half-asleep most of the time (no, nothing sexy about that too).

Mark my words, Rule #1 is Kelvin Tong’s best movie to date, and definitely very well executed, as good as or even better than any Asian thriller in recent memory. He has shown again that he can craft commercially viable and intelligent movies with relatively original stories to tell. "

Pang arrives in Hong Kong with no grasp of the local Cantonese language, an empty stomach and a scrap of paper clueing him in to the grisly assignment before him.

Meanwhile, a bitter young cop, Wai, is perpetually butting heads and breaking rules in his department. Alerted to Pang’s crime, Wai leaps into action, and is soon confronted face to face with the hit man’s ruthlessness. The two begin a violent descent into depravity and vengeance, and the lines between cop and crook, predator and prey, human and vicious beast are soon blurred.

But when Pang takes a simpleminded, sexually abused refugee under his wing, the stakes are raised even more dramatically and circumstances hurtle toward a shocking climax of tragedy and redemption.

Unlike so many Hong Kong cop-versus-criminal capers, DOG BITE DOG is no honorable gentleman’s joust of begrudging mutual respect. As the title suggests, this is a battle to the death worthy of the most savage nature documentary, a collision of unstoppable force and immovable object -- one driven by unfettered vengefulness, the other by the will to survive at any cost. Eunyoung becomes increasingly annoyed by all the brazen looks from the men; she also finds it hard to bear the jealous women.

One day she is raped. A man that had been following her for ages attacks her. Afterwards, he turns himself in. On his way to prison he declares his undying love for her. Convinced that her beauty is responsible for the crime, Eunyoung begins to hate her appearance so much that she decides to destroy it. For this reason she makes friends with an obese woman whose overeating she tries to imitate in vain. Although she eats huge amounts of food, her body refuses to put on any weight and the whole ordeal is unbearable. But even the opposite action has no effect. When she stops eating she doesn't become anorexic, she just feels ill. One day on the street she meets the man she thought was serving a prison sentence for having raped her.

"...Cha Soo Yeon turns in an amazingly brave performance as the tortured protagonist, managing to add real emotional depth to a role which is frequently wordless, and undoubtedly being deserving of some kind of award for the sheer number of vomit scenes she has to retch her way through. The film is clever in that whilst Jeon encourages sympathy for Eun Young, presenting her as a vulnerable woman badly in need of assistance, at the same time he implicates the viewer in her suffering. The film has an unsettling air of voyeurism throughout, keeping Eun Young at a distance, and making it clear through her constant fear of being watched that the viewer is perhaps not so different from the other characters who spy on her and who derive enjoyment from her torments. As a result, the proceedings have a certain aggressive intelligence, forcing the viewer to evaluate their own role, and, even more disturbingly, to identify not so much with Eun Young herself as with the increasingly crazed Eun Cheol....

...Although this is unlikely to make “Beautiful” any more palatable for more sensitive viewers, or indeed anyone seeking a more traditional slice of drama, it does give it a certain sense of maturity. A brilliantly subversive and darkly intelligence piece, it combines the best of Kim Ki Duk’s early and latter periods, being both incredibly grim and somewhat abstract, and is a must see for any fans of his work. Whether Jeon will develop a cinematic voice of his own in the future remains to be seen, but for the moment he certainly stands as an interesting director, and one whose vision sits quite comfortably with that of his mentor... "...The plot is pretty simply but its presentation is not. A Triad boss is abducted on the way to trial by a crack, international team of lawless mercenaries and an elite Interpol team is assembled to track him down. The crime boss ultimately has little to do with the story which becomes engulfed in an urban war between both sides...

...The action is surprisingly violent, even by Hong Kong standards. Police have their throats sliced open and are pointlessly ambushed and gunned down like cattle. A torture victim is hung from hooks embedded into his shoulders. Another guy is dragged down a hallway by a rope and when his buddies catch up to him, all they find is his severed leg dangling from the ceiling. Others suffer from knife wounds, flying metal shrapnel, fire, and even an umbrella that is quickly converted to fire its wire frame into victims like lethal crossbow darts...

... What I find especially odd is that Michael Biehn, who plays the lead villain and is one of only two Caucasian characters, is given more depth and attention than anyone else. Surprisingly, a sub-plot involving Biehn’s relationship with the wife of a Triad boss, played by Li Bing-bing, is actually pretty decent. Lee could have easily cut out half the cast and focused more intently on Biehn and it could have worked better.

As much as I like Sammo and enjoy watching him fight, his character serves no purpose in this movie because it is far too underdeveloped. He’s supposed to be a mentor to the Interpol team but it’s heavily contrived. The chemistry between him and the team is non-existent. Really, the only reason Sammo is here is so he can fight and he’s doubled for a good portion of his big duel with Korean actor Heo Joon-ho so what’s the point? Thankfully, one of the worst fight sequences of his entire career was cut out of the final print (it can be found as an extra on the Dragon Dynasty DVD)..."

" The main attraction here for anyone that isn't a die-hard fan of the manga are the numerous racing scenes, which are well-shot and edited, with sleek cinematography that is a marvel to behold. Although some of the shots are CGI, especially some of the crashes, it is still presented in a way that makes it relatively seamless, even if it isn't always perfect. In addition to the visual aspects, Initial D benefits from a hip soundtrack of hip hop and pop tunes, a bevy of souped-up street racers, and a cast of heartthrob actors that should keep some of the young female audience entertained as well. "

You really start caring for the characters while they make efforts to keep themselves faithful to the band and, at the same time, wishing for better days. It is also a story of love and loyalty with transitions of violent and bloody scenes which, strangely enough, feel natural to the melodic pace of the movie.

The movie is not perfect and has several flaws and weaknesses but it is, in the end, a really nice, original and enjoyable film. "
