A divorced couple learns that the only way to save their little daughter Hehe, who suffers from a blood disease, is to have another child. A story of parenthood, love, married life, betrayal, trust and giving, which touches upon changes in contemporary society and family life, as well as the moral and ethical dilemmas brought on by modernity.

" ... Script takes some 40 minutes to clear its throat before popping the big dramatic question, building the audience’s trust in the characters and preparing it for the major leap of faith. Those 40 minutes, however, are very restrained, with the protags going about their everyday business and family affairs in a glum, wintry Beijing that, though nicely composed in widescreen, doesn’t build a warm or caring enough environment to make the plot jump believable.

Movie’s middle is largely devoted to making Mei Zhu’s decision — as well as Xiao Lu’s complicity — seem emotionally convincing, before further developments lead to an even more extreme proposal by Mei Zhu. Liu, largely known for her TV dramas, is extremely good in the lead role, but doesn’t quite catch the obsessional love for her daughter necessary to make the story work.

Though helmer Wang has shown an aptitude for black comedy in only one past movie — the little-known “Dream House” (1999) — pic could have worked better by taking this route rather than the very earnest one deployed here. Script also seems to have little idea of what to do with the crucial character of Dong Fan, apart from making her a grouchy young professional; several scenes between her and Xiao Lu repeat themselves, and the role only takes on some sympathy in the very final stages.

Still, most of the perfs sustain interest, with Zhang Jiayi bringing some lightness to the pic as Xiao Lu, a typical modern entrepreneur also plagued by business problems. In the movie’s most low-key perf, as the good-hearted Xie, Cheng is exceptionally good, bringing some real heart to the final reel.

Earlier English title was “Left Right,” which translates the Chinese. Though the words appear on screen during the movie’s early stages, the ping-pong idea between the two couples isn’t developed — though, again, could have worked if the whole shebang had been played as a black comedy. "

Mei Lan Fang was born to a family of Beijing Opera performers in 1894. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the social status of opera performers was equivalent to prostitutes of that time. Though his performance was appreciated by many, his feminine roles received disdain. Mei Lan Fang incurred the wrath of veteran performer and family friend Shi Sanyan. Mei Lan Fang's outstanding performance captured the love and admiration of the young audience and this threatened Shi Sanyan's prestigious status. With Mei Lan Fang overshadowing him, Shi Sanyan launched a duel with Mei Lan Fang. Mei Lan Fang was unwilling to continue the duel with Shi Sanyan as he knew he was leading and that Shi Sanyan was just fighting for his dignity. However, Shi Sanyan was adamant on competing till the end, and as a result, he was defeated and died. With Shi Sanyan's demise, Mei Lan Fang feared that he would end up the same way. He went on with his life and married Fu Zhifang. Not only he built a family, he also built an esteemed career that made him famous in Asia. Upon invitation, he went to perform in United States and met a fellow actress, Meng Xiaodong, who performed masculine roles. Mei Lan Fang was attracted by her open mind and humour and they became confidantes. Fu Zhifang interfered in the blossoming friendship, thus resulting in Meng Xiaodong's decision to leave Mei Lan Fang. Despite the loss of a confidante, Mei Lan Fang continued to do excellent portrayals in his performance, thus winning the hearts of Western audience. In his whole life, Mei Lan Fang lived his whole life in the paper cangue and calmly took it for granted. He won people's love with a bravery to confront all calamities. He conquered the shame and fear he was born with. When he himself was no longer an obstacle, nothing would be.

" Biopic Forever Enthralled stages director Chen Kaige’s anticipated return to his Farewell My Concubine roots but falls short of matching up to his previous Palme d'Or winning film at the Cannes Film Festival. Still, it makes for a commendable and lavish production vis-à-vis the critically panned The Promise in 2005.

Non-Beijing Opera buffs need not fret over any inability to lap up this film as Forever Enthralled has indeed been tailor made for the accessibility of the masses. This submission for Berlin International Film Festival’s Golden Bear award follows Mei Lan Fang (Leon Lai), one of China’s most legendary opera actors in its modern history, on his life journey. For the unintiated, Mei was widely renowned then for his dexterous and uncanny portrayals of women. Under mentor Qiu Rubai (Sun Honglei), Mei’s rapid ascent to fame was not one without hurdles. His short-lived extra-marital affair with Meng Xiaodong (Zhang Ziyi), another prominent opera actor, shook things up both on and off stage. The Japanese Occupation of China too took a toll on Mei’s career, but what probably encapsulated his seemingly troubled self may be attributed to the way people, even his loved ones like Qiu, seemed to be ‘forever enthralled’ by the actor.

The first segments of Forever Enthralled can be said to be the highlight of the film. Mei’s surpassing of veteran actor Shi Sanyan captivates one as we watch the two battle it out in a smogasbord of opulent performances with intricate costumes and skills. However, the demise of Shi seems to cast a shadow on Mei’s bright future prospects and one cannot help but worry about what is in store for this star amongst the inevitability of the rise and fall of actors in the opera world. Shi’s insistence on carrying on with a performance despite an empty house is particularly heartwrenching when juxtaposed with the cacophonous reception Mei receives.

Despite this sterling start up, the rest of Forever Enthralled sags with bits that do not quite seem to fit in. The Japanese Occupation part, for instance, seems as if it was hurriedly inserted into the film and does not exactly flow.

However, all these are fortunately buoyed by exceptional acting from Sun Honglei and Zhang Ziyi. Sun, especially, commands a stellar performance as the dedicated Qiu. He even threatens to outshine Lai in certain scenes by pushing the envelope with his depiction of Qiu’s wholehearted devotion to Mei and this is what ultimately ties the threads of this film together. Meanwhile, Zhang puts the spring in the step of Forever Enthralled with an ever so effervescent Meng. The Memoirs of a Geisha actress’s recent scandal of topless cavorting with her Israeli beau may have made the headlines for the wrong reason but she more than makes up for it in her light-hearted but enjoyable acting in this film. A poignant scene where she and Mei’s wife (Chen Hong) sit broodingly in her courtyard exudes a sense of forlorn pensiveness.

On the other hand, leading actor Lai comes across as being visibly wooden as pivotal character Mei and his attempts to appear distant and removed may not sit well with audiences.

As a side note, one wonders though if Forever Enthralled might have brought more substance had Gillian Chung (one half of Hong Kong girl duo Twins)’s role had not been axed from the film as a result of her scandal laden year involving bad boy Edison Chen that took the media by storm. "

" ...Director Chen Hung-I's Candy Rain could be the most perfectly titled film ever. Like candy, the film is sweet and tasty in small doses. However, too much is probably bad for you, and prolonged exposure would definitely lead to cavities. Also, the film's obvious meaning falls unavoidably like rain, and even an umbrella won't fully protect you. The best thing: staying indoors and avoiding it entirely. And it's time to stop the cheesy metaphors because they're strained and more than a little annoying. Oddly, "strained and more than a little annoying" could apply to Candy Rain too. Funny how that works out.
By the time story four rolls around, Candy Rain is so obvious in its intent and meaning that one may not care to parse every one of the film's details or metaphors. Chen Hung-I uses a multitude of styles and storytelling techniques, shifting between delicate sensitivity and brazen over-the-top comedy, but the bottom line of the film is always easy to discern because it's handed to the audience in an overt, obvious manner. Nothing truly revealing occurs in Candy Rain. The omnibus format dictates that these stories must be cursory, and since their meaning is handed out explicitly and directly, there's little left for the audience to ponder besides the hip art direction, cool MTV sensibilities, and faux Wong Kar-Wai effervescence. Candy Rain feels like art film-lite, and delivers familiar musings on love and life while not providing much surprise.

Worse, Candy Rain can become tiring, thanks in large part to the fourth story, which is edgy and over-the-top in an irritating manner. Karena Lam is not a very subtle comedienne, and is somewhat miscast in the film's final overdone segment. The rest of the actresses range from acceptable to engaging, with actress Sandrine Pinna making the largest impact thanks to her OCD-suffering character's quirkiness. There are some new and interesting faces among these actresses, and many will hopefully go on to more promising things. Candy Rain isn’t a bad start for any of them, and indeed is successful enough as a deliberate pop-art confection to find some success at college screenings or film fests. It's just not revealing or unique enough to register as truly special.... "

" The plot synopsis really doesn’t do this movie justice. The movie starts off with Geum-Ja being released from prison, and her past is told through flashbacks. “Sympathy For Lady Vengeance” delivers one hell of an uneasy combination of artful cinematography, black comedy, and heavy violence at times.

During her stay in prison Geum-Ja transforms from a naive youg girl, to somewhat of a Mother Theresa that kills, helping fellow female prisoners who are weak & vulnerable like she was at the age 19. When Geum-Ja finally catches Mr. Baek, she administers pure vigilante justice, which I found disturbing and difficult to watch. The ending scene with the tofu cake was brilliant. Traditionally, in Korea, when someone leaves jail they eat tofu, to consume the whiteness/goodness of the tofu and leave the darkness of their past behind, well Geum-Ja does a little more then eat a piece of the tofu, she submerges her face into the tofu cafe.

This is the last in director Chan-Wook Park’s trilogy dealing with the theme of Vengeance. His prior two movies “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” and “Oldboy” dealt with similar themes of vengeance and the effects vengeance has upon the people involved in that link of violence. Also, since I am junkie for asian cinema, I had a blast watching various characters from the director’s previous films make cameo appearances (Besides the two main characters, Geum-Ja who appeared in the director’s first film “Joint Security Area” and Mr. Baek who was “Oldboy”). Towards the beginning when a lady news announcer was shown on tv it was the charming “Mido” from Oldboy, notice the two people waiting in the alley to kidnap Geum-Ja and her daughter, they were the two principle characters in “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeace”, the Pastry store owner was the gold-tooth dude in Oldboy, and when Geum-Ja finally met the ghost of the 5 year old boy towards the end of the film, the 5 year old boy transformed into an adult - who so happened to be the main villain in Oldboy! See what happens to people consumed with vengeance?. "

Without money or influence, the only hope to save his brother is for Jin-Tae to enlist in suicidal missions in order to earn the Medal Of Honor, which will guaranteed Jin-Seok realises the truth of his brothers sacrifice

Jin-Seok fails to understand his brother's actions and misinterprets them as a dangerous mix of patriotism and an obsession with fame and glory. It is only at the fatal end that Jin-Seok realises the truth of his brother's sacrifice

" ...The pairing up of the charismatic Jang Donggun and handsome idol Won Bin is amazingly effective. The inner struggle of JinTae, a man of few words but conveyed successfully by Jang’s brooding eyes and compelling body skills. Won Bin who in the past has acted only in Korean Drama serials (“Taegukgi” is his second big screen feature) have shown tremendous potential opposite Jang. If both of them were unable to convince the audience, the movie would be a straight flop seeing that their screen time occupied at least 98% of the 140 minutes movie. The rest of the supporting cast did a marvelous job as well. Due to the limitations of the plot, most characters are left mostly unexplored citing the case of Lee EunJoo who portrayed the pitiful, wife-to-be of JinTae. Towards the last act of the movie, a little portion of the communist issue gets lengthy and nearly falls to the trap of being too emotional and melodrama.

Technically, “Taegukgi” has achieved great heights. Possessing the highest production budget (US$13 million) in Korean movie industry. The efforts which go to the props, costumes, locations, ammunition, armored vehicles and extras are comparable to a Hollywood production. Even the ongoing seasons and unpredictable weather are captured beautifully on screen. With the exception of the CG enhanced fighter planes which looked too cheesy even from afar. Guess the comfort of engaging ILM is out of the question. Apparently, a tremendous amount of research is done to ensure the authenticity of the numerous details.

Did I left out the battle sequences? Nope, we are coming to that. For those who like plenty of battle sequences, well, there are plenty. Multiple explosions, mutilated bodies, gunshots and hand-to-hand combats graced the screen for almost every 15 minutes of screen time. Though it would be better if the cinematographer can actually pulled back the camera a bit so as to allow the audience to indulge in the spectacle.

Director Kang JeGyu has proven he is not just an ordinary box-office director. But one that possess the heart to weave a tale that is heart-warming and touching to the core of many. Next time, don’t dismiss your gifts from your love ones as simply gifts, a pen or a pair of shoes can do wonders to memories (I wouldn’t want to give away anything here, go watch the movie). “Brotherhood” as it is re-titled here locally, is a touching tale worth telling and watching. If there is only one movie that is going to put Korean movie industry to the world. This is going to be it! ... "

Based on the Internet novel of the same and written by Yeo-ni Gui, “Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do” is a touching love story with bittersweet elements. Jung-won wears a funny dragon suit, while working at the amusement park, and pours soda on Eun-kyoo, because of his taunts.

A short while later, Jung-won finds out that Eun-kyoo has moved into the house next to hers. Eun-kyoo now threatens to tell Jung-won’s parents that she works part time at the amusement park. To keep Eun-kyoo quiet, Jung-won agrees to carry his guitar for a week.

Jung-won then starts developings feelings for Eun-kyoo, who is the lead singer in a band called Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. Eun-kyoo also starts to develop similar feelings for Jung-won. The two soon become a couple.

With an odd twist of fate, Jung-won goes to the bands rehearsal room and meets a familiar person from her past, a boy named Hui-won. Their relationship makes everything make more complicated. 10 years ago, Jung-won and Hui-won were close friends, but because of a personal matter stopped talking to each other completely. Jung-won is now surprised to learn that her ex-close friend is now best friends with her boyfriend. Will their relationships survive?

"... I remember a Japanese movie that I have seen a few years ago called "Swallowtail Butterfly", I was not really impressed by the movie but a lot of people that I know really loved it. I was really surprised when I saw that April Story was also directed by the same director: Shunji Iwai. But April Story and Swallow Tail are very different, even if both share a very beautiful cinematography, Swallowtail is a lot darker that Aprils Story which is a drama with some subtitle humor, about a young girl who tries to fit into her new situation. The story is very simple, believable and especially fun to follow. The only down side of the story is in my opinion the ending…I wanted more! It would have been great to know what will happen to the characters. The movie is also really short, about 1H5 min, but it stills a great story and even with the short ending I found it very enjoyable and heart cheerful.

The movie really focuses on only one character, which is Nireno, played marvelously by Takako Matsu. There's a great deal of development for that character and even if the movie doesn't give a lot of screen time to other secondary characters, we are never bored to watch that small girl trying so hard to fit into her new life. It's true that the character was not really original, stereotyped as the beautiful girl who is very shy and doesn't have a lot of friends. But I think that was a strong point of the character, in the sense that the story would not have worked the same way with a girl who would have had a strong attitude toward the life.

Expecting a typical drama, I was really surprised with the humor in the movie, it also ended up being my favorite aspect of the whole movie. But wait, don't expect April Story to be a comedy or you will miss the whole point; the humor is there to only create a balance between the dramatic and comedy aspect of the story. The humor is very light and subtle, in fact very simple and typical Japanese humor. The drama part was also very simple, but it was not the type of love story that tries every trick in the book to make you cry. Instead it developed on the theme that life can be sometime hard but great things can happen when you least expect it.

As much as it can surprise you with the great scenery or by his cheerful story, April Story is a really beautiful movie that has a lot to offer. Maybe those who cant live without bloody action will probably have a good sleep but if you are attracted by this kind of movie, be sure to not miss it. ..."

SYNOPSIS:
After a biological terrorist attack kills off the population of a Russian town; Japan's Public Safety Special Third unit, code name THIRD-i, believes that the terrorist organization responsible plans to unleash the same virus known as Bloody X into Tokyo. Subsequently, THIRD-i recruits the help of genius hacker Takagi Fujimaru to find out what happened in the Russia. However, as Fujimaru becomes involved, he soon finds out that he is in over his head and that the terrorist groups influence reaches not only his school but even the police. Fujimaru must now rely on his skill as a hacker to unravel the organizations sinister plot and find out the truth behind "Bloody Monday."
