Soul's Code

SYNOPSIS:

When a murdered body of a highschool girl is found naked with a strange mark on her forehead, which is to prevent the vengeance of her spirit, Detective Khan (Nuttakorn Taewakul) from DSI is assigned to investigate the case. The dead girl is brought to Dr. Nicha (Premsini Rathanasopa) at CIFS in Bangkok to find more clues and identify the body. Meanwhile, C (Patiwat Ruengsri), a former teenager's heartthrob is involved in this case when he begins to search for his lost ex-girlfriend. When the ghost is trying to connect to the living, Detective Khan starts to believe in something supernatural that leads him to the truth.

REVIEW:

"Soul’s Code ends up being a passable Police Procedural, a nod to forensics, and only an acceptable ghost story. Our vengeful spirit relies more on gentle nudging and some flickering lights, and maybe a few strange sounds to get the job done. If you were hoping for a little sequence of bullet vs ghost you’ll have to look elsewhere. But the ending is worth it ... just not in a way you’d probably expect."

Cherry Tomato

SYNOPSIS:

Park Gu makes a living for himself and his granddaughter Da-seong by collecting recyclable paper on the street. Their situation becomes worse when his son is released from prison and steals Park's savings, and his bicycle-drawn cart ― his only tool for making money ― is destroyed by construction workers. Park visits the house of the construction company's head, where he ends up trying to steal meat for his hungry granddaughter. But the meat, which was for the owner's dog, had been poisoned by the housekeeper, who doesn't like her boss.

REVIEW:
"Cherry Tomato depicts the poverty-stricken life of an old man and his granddaughter in a realistic way that evokes a strong sense of sympathy. But the ultimate emotion the film triggers is, for better or worse, helplessness.
In the movie, to be released on May 29, Sin Goo has taken the first silver-screen title role in his 45-year-long acting career, and delivered a realistic character who can be easily sympathized with. His far younger counterpart, Kim Hyang-ki, also pulls off an equally convincing portrayal of a character.
The movie's emphasis on the ethos of the have-nots raises an important question about whether Korean society takes care of the poor properly, offering a great starting point for discussing thought-provoking social issues. But the plot does not take the audience much farther, as if symbolizing the perennial trap for those living and struggling under the poverty line."

It's a welcome return to quality animation from Korea and a great example of why we're stretching our rules about anime reviews a little to allow it the promotion it deserves..."

SYNOPSIS:

In the dark criminal world of Seoul, U-min (Song Seung-Heon), Cheol-jung (Kwon Sang-Woo), Do-wan (Kim In-kwon) and Yeong-hwan (Ji Sung) are close friends in a gang. One day, with the help of an older member Gang-seop (Ahn Nae-seong), U-min, Cheol-jung and Do-wan attack the gang’s casino so they can start new lives. But their plan goes awry when Cheol-jung betrays them, and U-min goes to prison. He becomes the scapegoat to save his friends’ lives.

After serving his time, U-min wants to stay out of trouble but is drawn back into the underworld when he sees what has become of his friends: money and power-hungry Cheol-jung continues to betray others as he climbs up the gang ladder; Do-wan is a drug user; Gang-seop is missing; and his girlfriend Eun-yeong (Park Han-byul) has left him to run a bar as the boss’ mistress.

As U-min tries to solve the situation, however, unfortunate twists of fate set off one misunderstanding after another. To make matters worse, the mob boss and right-hand man Yoeng-hwan get them involved in a huge drug deal. Once again thrown into a game with high stakes and big cash, the once best friends must fight one another for their lives.

"..."Fate" has been made with a careful consideration for the strengths of two main characters. But the portraits of Woo-min and Cheol-jung never go beyond admiration of their contrasting styles and panache for violence, and one comes away with such sour questions as "Why are Korean filmmakers so obsessed with a gangster genre for depicting friendship?"

Despite the longer-than-necessary running time of 123 minutes, Song Seung-heon seems at ease with himself, showcasing his "telling eyes" that express various emotions with subtlety and maturity.

But true show-stealing gigs come from Kwon Sang-woo who seems in perfect sync with his own character. All the low-life slang spitting out from Cheol-jung sound natural and even ironically insightful.

Kwon, from now on, should consider taking the role of a hot-tempered villain because, at least in "Fate," he seems more realistic and believable than ever."

"...There are so many superfluous scenes of bizarre dialogue crammed into the 2+ hour running time that it’s hard to even describe beyond the basic plot points. Yusuke Iseya plays Taichi in such an over-the-top way that he seems like a manga character on amphetamines. In fact, aside from the main AKB48 girls everyone in the movie from teachers to cops to Riku and his coworkers seem kind of insane and not particularly protective of their own lives before they even sing the suicide song. In a way I think this tongue-in-cheek approach was just a round-about way to comment on the absurdity of suicide and how sometimes the line between being perfectly happy and wanting to off yourself for the smallest reason can be unreasonably thin. Over 30,000 people kill themselves in Japan every year, and far too often the problems that drive them to it are solvable.

Given the fact that this movie has been, and will probably continue to be marketed to horror fans it seems important to point out that it’s completely devoid of any scares whatsoever. There are three or four scenes that are probably supposed to be scary but they all end up being dreams or fake-outs for comic relief. But hey, who wants to be scared by a movie when they could be humming catchy little ditties like “Aitakatta” and Boku no Hana instead?..."

The Moss

This crime-drama follows the story of a cop (Shawn Yue) who has emerged from an undercover stint in the triads, only to find that he can't escape so easily. After they mess with his loved ones, he retaliates.
Jan (Shawn Yu) is one of the many dirty cops living in the area. He’s really more like a gangster than a cop. Self-serving and living aimlessly in this hellhole of an area, he constantly have dealings with the mobs and offers protection to the prostitutes in exchange for sexual favours. Of all the girls, he fancies Lulu (Bonnie Xian) most. He finds her non-inquisitive and quiet nature comforting, almost like a place where he can seek solace.
Jan's peaceful routine is disrupted when the son of God mom Chong (Susan Shaw) goes missing in a rival gang’s territory headed by the four-eyed Tong. Along with his disappearance is a valuable green gemstone that was meant as a birthday gift from her son. Jan is tasked by Chong to confront Tong (Liu Kai Chi). At this moment, a mysterious beggar (Louis Fan) makes an attempt to kill Tong.

REVIEW:

"...For one thing, the metaphor and meaning require labored explanation, and for another, these characters are very difficult to care about. There's supposed pathos in the Beggar's friendship with Fa, plus Jan's murky loyalties to his job and his girl, but Kwok fails to make the situations matter. The intended significance of them is easy to discern, as it's spelled out with navel-gazing dialogue and more than a few extended metaphors. However, the characters themselves are not truly likable, and the details made to humanize them - the Beggar's love for his mother, and Fa's affinity for a fantasy pop-up book - never become more than just narrative devices. Shawn Yue's Jan is even less compelling, because his character arc is one of maturation or growth, and simply watching Shawn Yue brood doesn't get the job done. The midsection of The Moss drags, and it takes its characters and situations down with it.

Thankfully, the film does recover for a surprisingly violent finale that entertains in a visceral, if not substantial manner. Characters get sweaty and bloody, and there is some feeling of redemption, minor though it may be. The problem is that The Moss wants it to be major. This is a pretentious film, more so than Pye-Dog as The Moss lacks the playfulness and likeable characters that came with Kwok's previous film. Other than a few guiltily fun gags (the hiding place of the emerald is an amusing, though dirty talking point), The Moss is a largely serious affair, with only the occasional black humor adding some edge. Many of the film's more interesting talking points may have nothing to do with its meaning, e.g. the casting of TVB fixture Gill Mohindepaul Singh in a key role, or the minor crime riffs that feel taken from the Johnnie To/Milkyway playbook. There's still value in The Moss, and Derek Kwok remains a director to watch. One hopes, however, that he can find new stories and ideas to work with rather than leaning on his established devices..."

"...While the movie lacks the effects and a strong storyline, the actors presumably have done very well in their roles. The voice of Hong Kong actor Lau Ching-Wan manages to give life to the gourd with his amusing voice performance that otherwise, the movie would have been a total failure. Gigi Leung, meanwhile acts as Wang Bao’s teacher that her existence is merely to teach the kids a valuable lesson with sayings like “there’s no such thing as an unearned reward”.

Eventually, the Magic Gourd is a movie more suitable for kids with its objective to educate them instead of just mere entertainment."

"While The Magic Gourd may not be the breakthrough Centro had hoped for, the children at the screening I attended were obviously amused throughout, and I even heard a few laughs from the adults. Despite the effects work being far from convincing, Centro does pull off the fantasy aspect well from time to time. You will laugh, you might cry (mos of the time the well-meaning-but-underappreciated gourd is sadly more sympathetic than main focus Wang Bo), and you might even learn something. As far as children's entertainment go, The Magic Gourd does the job with a passing grade."

SYNOPSIS:

REVIEW:

A Song To The Sun is a sweet little film, that surprisingly doesn’t pack the excessive melodrama one would expect from a film centered around a girl with a debilitating disease. The film seems made particularly for teenage folks and mainstream cinema goers, so stylistically you can expect a film similar to Kentaro Otani’s Nana.

The movie does feature a promising JPop singer / actress named Yui, that plays the lead character “Kaoru.” This would have been my first exposure to her and from watching her performance in the movie I would guess she will have a very promising career in film and music. In “A Song To The Sun” Kaoru often goes out by herself at night and performs songs out in the public. The songs would be similar in style to Avril Lavigne if she was performing with just a acoustic guitar. At times to cutesy for me, but nevertheless Yui did have a charming voice, and the ending song was quite moving. Her acting was believable and perhaps more importantly she really seemed to be the character “Kaoru.” Also, it was hard not to be impressed by her beauty. Her co-star, Takashi Tsukamoto, was as impressive playing Kouji. I did remember Takashi Tsukamoto from Battle Royale (he played the boy with the laptop). In retrospect, the amount of Japanese actors/actresses that starred in Battle Royale and then went on to have even bigger careers is mind boggling.

I found the pacing to be very good for a teenage melodrama type of movie. Not exactly fast paced but not deathly slow like Sugar & Spice. The movie felt a lot shorter than its 119 minute runtime and I would guess this would be due to the movie’s ability to draw the viewer in from the get go. A movie like “A Song To The Sun” not only provides for an emotional film going experience, but it sure can make you reassess the severity of problems that you have in your everyday life. Somewhere during the second half of the film, I did start to get nervous that the movie would pile on the excessive melodrama at the end, but fortunately the movie did not. The ending is done with tact and in a realistic manner, which results in a heavier punch by the final scenes of Kaoru’s song being played on the radio.

SYNOPSIS:

After solving the Kira case, another serious case confronts L and he has only 23 days left to solve it.

A boy and a girl hold the keys to solving the case and L faces a crisis of global magnitude to protect the kids. He is without his most trusted partner, Watari, and cannot rely on just his superb intellect to solve the case.

What will happen to L? What will change? The 23 days are packed with turns of events even L himself cannot predict. The final countdown to the shocking events are about to begin!

REVIEW:

Originally planned as a prequel spinoff, it has however become a sequel instead, reflecting on L’s final 23 days of existence on Earth. We get some closure on what happened after L checkmate Yagami Light (Kira) at the end of Death Note: The Last Name. Watari, Amane Misa and Ryuk makes cameo appearances but no sight of “Kira” or the police which was disappointing.

It then moves on where we see a Thai village getting decimated by a deadly virus and proceeding to learning about a group’s evil plot to use the combination of the flu and Ebola virus so that they can eliminate the majority of the human race, ridding the planet of useless people while also preserving the environment. Ok, now this sounds a bit familiar and predictable.

If you are expecting to see a battle of wits here like in Death Note, well you will be disappointed. But on it’s own as an action film, it stands on its own as Kenichi Matsuyama potrayal of L is given more character development as we learn more about his liking for sweets, etc. The film really comes to life whenever he appears on screen, whether it’s babysitting the two children which was hilarious, or trying to walk without bending his back, etc. But all in all, it’s a pretty simple plot where everything just falls in place without L really needing to do anything much. I think it will do well at the box office though.

Fan of L would definitely love this film while for “Kira” fans expecting wittier, dark brain battles would be left slightly disappointed
