REVIEW:
" With a premise that had the ability to pull on your heartstrings like the classic “Crying Out Love In The Center Of The World” and the film featuring two well known former Japanese pop stars, “Heaven Can Wait. Maybe..” had the potential to be one memorable Japanese melodrama. Unfortunately the film felt like an emotionless vacuum unable to pull on anything but your sense of disbelief.
The film centered around three life long friends : Hiroki, Kauro, and Takeshi. Although from their earliest days it was apparent that Kauro and Hiroki were in love, Takeshi took the initiative to propose to Kauro when they were adults. Hiroki being the loyal friend was only able to mutter a few feeble words of encouragement to the couple. From there it only got worse … literally and figuratively.
The two pop stars appearing in the film were Shunsuke Kiyokiba (Takeshi) and Yoshihiko Inohara (Hiroki). Shunsuke Kiyokiba first rose to fame with the popular J-Pop group Exile and then moved on to have a successful solo musical career. His debut as an actor was not so successful, but showed promise. There is a charismatic onscreen appearance about him, yet the more emotional demanding scenes revealed that he’s not quite there yet as a full fledged actor. His enervated co-star Yoshihiko Inohara first achieved fame on a similar path, with the wildly popular J-Pop group V6. Unfortunately, Yoshihiko Inohara’s performance was just pitiful. The sole expression on Hiroki’s face, all throughout the film, was that of a person suffering from painful indigestion! Furthermore, his character was written in such a dopey manner that it was difficult to sympathize him or even believe he was anything but a buffoon.
Meanwhile, Aya Okamoto played Kauro - the object of desire for the two main leads. Although she wasn’t as bad as Yoshihiko Inohara, she did exude the presence of say…a blank white wall. In other words Aya Okamoto basically smiled her way through the film. After watching her prior performance in “Metro Ni Notte” (an absolute turd) and now the tepid “Heaven Cant Wait..” I don’t think I will watch anymore of her movies anytime soon. On the bright side, Erika Toda of Death Note & Death Note 2 fame performed well in her supporting role as Takeshi’s sister. Whenever she came on screen she was able to bring some sunshine into a movie that desperately needed some sunshine. It’s just unfortunate Erika Toda and Aya Okamoto didn’t swap roles.
The story itself contained an interesting premise, but was saddled with way to many clichés and lackadaiscal pacing. As the story developed the premise got more preposterous by the minute. From Takeshi’s father telling Hiroki “my daughter in law always loved you,” to Kaoru asking Hiroki “What are we going to do?” to the inexplicable last “relapse” the storyline was just filled with holes and cheese.
Ultimately the film does comes across like a huge white void of nothingness, filled with colorless characters that do all the wrong things at the wrong time. Yup…a whole bunch of losers. The movie whiffed at every attempt to elicit emotions from the audience, while it foolishly challenged their sense of rational belief. “Heaven Can Wait. Maybe…” but you shouldn’t."
