SYNOPSIS: This melodramatic Japanese tearjerker concerns a young woman who receives the most devastating news of her life: not only has she developed breast cancer, it is quickly metastasizing throughout her body and she has only a short time to live. Aware that the news will threaten to destroy her relationship with her boyfriend if he learns of it, she unsuccessfully attempts to conceal the information from him; he finds out anyway and plans to marry the girl despite her prognosis of only a month left to live.
RATING: 8/10 NOTE: A touching movie based on a true story!
REVIEW: "... How Taro faithfully sticks by Chie’s hospital-bound days is recounted in great detail by director Ryuichi Hiroki. We see the couple exchange sweet-nothings, celebrate their special occasions, and finally take that final leap to matrimony- the pinnacle of their profound love for each other. All this while Taro endures countless rounds of treatment and eventually survives on painkillers to numb the pervasive pain.
Every one of these moments, whether unassuming or exceptional, are both heart-warming and heart-renching at the same time- heart-warming because of the zest for life Taro and Chie are determined to have despite Chie’s circumstance; and heart-renching because what happiness they share is always overshadowed by Chie’s impending passing. Credit goes to director Hiroki for not resorting to maudlin melodrama to milk the audience’s sympathy; instead his approach of the subject of death is unusually dignified, particularly for a film of this nature.
But Hiroki also has a habit of drawing out scenes past their welcome, such that "April Bride" does feel like an interminable affair in parts. There’s no doubt this 'lingering' approach does allow certain scenes (such as Chie’s final video message to Taro) to achieve greater emotional significance, but Hiroki’s gratuitous use of technique also considerably slows down the 129-min film especially where it could have been shorter and tighter.
The true stars of the film are indeed Nana Eikura and Eita, who play Chie and Taro respectively. Besides working their tearducts very hard, the pair give earnest, sincere performances, capturing beautifully the fears and vulnerabilities Chie and Taro would only naturally experience. Ditto for Akira Emoto and Satomi Tezuka, who play Taro’s stoic father and compassionate aunt- through their heartfelt acting, the ensemble cast pay a befitting tribute to the real-life characters they are portraying on-screen.
So too does "April Bride" honour the true-to-life story it tells- one of fortitude, of determination and of resolve to live and also to love. That fortitude, determination and resolve lies not just in Chie, but also in her partner Taro, for the undying love he displays towards her. Twice in the movie is Bette Midler’s "The Rose" played, its lyrics below:
"Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed Some say love it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love it is a hunger, an endless aching need I say love it is a flower and you it's only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun's love In the spring becomes the rose."
and its significance could not be more true- the truest, purest and most beautiful form of love is that forged through life’s harshest winters. "

While in the program, Kanna uncovers clues to Friend's real identity, and the shocking discovery of The New Book of Prophecies!
Kanna tries to find out who wrote The New Book of Prophecies and unravels the true identity of Friend!
RATING: ?/10 NOTE: I know I'm late. Late is better than never, right? (By the way, I'm not a fan of this trilogy)
REVIEW: " If you are not a fan of the first 20th Century Boys, it’s doubtful that 20th Century Boys 2: the Last Hope will make a fan out of you. On the contrary if you are craving for some intellectual stimulant in the midst of this summer blockbusters, you will be getting your money worth with this one. In fact, it might be a little too taxing that it gives a mental overload workout.
Continuing in the same mould as the first movie, 20th Century Boys 2 is presented in an equally cryptic and challenging manner (especially if you haven’t read the Manga). More characters were introduced on top of the huge amount of characters that were introduced in the first movie. More questionable events that happened in the past and present (2015) were introduced to push the limits of the audience’s memory skills. All these additional elements gave the audience a mindboggling time and even to a degree, tiresome and dryness.
The problem in the second movie (of the planned trilogy) was that it does not actually progress the story to a whole new level. The whole doomsday scenario and a couple normal folks going against the powerful had become rather tedious and repetitive. It makes one wonder how many climatic doomsday finales can it happen to mankind and the grandeur of such doomsday are actually being diminished when it seems that humanity would often restore back to it’s status quo (or even better than it was before doomsday occurred). The inconsequence of the prophesized apocalypse makes it a tab less rewarding in following the puzzling storyline.
Besides that, it doesn’t help that Kanna (while pretty to look at)‘s exploits are far less engaging than the predecessor protagonist Kenji and his childhood story. While Kenji had a clear cut path from initial confusion to the eventual sacrificial heroics, Kanna’s path in this movie was a meandering one. It seems that while being the chosen one or the last hope (depending which side you are on), she had very little to bring to the plate. All she did in this movie was to relive her uncle past favorite’s pastimes and sulk when people identify her uncle as terrorist. There were some investigation to Friend’s identity and scheme on her part but along the way, it became rather irrelevant and unimportant.
But perhaps it’s too early to judge the seemly irrelevant bits of the second movie as it’s a tale that could only be told in all three parts. Although it does feel that the story is biting off more than it could chew. One could only hope that the third movie would be able to wrap up all those various story arcs introduced in the first movie and this installment.
If it’s anything like the revelation of what happened on the night that Donkey went back to the classroom to turn the fish tank air pump or the short introduction of the retiring cop and mere mention of his grandson that was played out in bigger parts in the second one, the third installment should be able to give this complex tale a satisfying closure.
That being said, it’s still a trying time in trying to figure out what’s happening. It felt that this movie is not taking the easy way out in pleasing the general crowd and instead, 20th Century Boys 2 chose to present a faithful adaption of the comic origin which takes the effort in capturing the essence of what worked in the pulp form.
Warning: Those who are unable to hold much thought in their brain and relied on visual fest should avoid this at all cost. Those who loved a mental challenge such as a extremely difficult Sudoku game without the help of a pencil and those who loved what had transpired in the first movie would probably enjoy this film more. "

SYNOPSIS: The story of RED CLIFF takes place in 208 AD in China during the Han Dynasty. Despite the presence of an emperor, Han Xiandi, China was then divided into many warring states.
The ambitious Prime Minister Cao Cao, by using the Emperor as his puppet, waged war on a kingdom in the west, Xu, ruled by the emperor’s uncle, Liu Bei. Cao Cao’s ultimate goal was to wipe out all the kingdoms and install himself as Emperor to a unified China. Liu Bei sent his military advisor Zhuge Liang as an envoy to the Wu Kingdom in the south, trying to persuade its ruler Sun Quan into joining forces. There he met Wu’s Viceroy Zhou Yu, and the two became friends amidst this uneasy alliance.
Enraged to learn that the two kingdoms have become allies, Cao Cao sent an army of eight hundred thousand soldiers and two thousand ships down south, hoping to kill two birds with one stone. Cao Cao’s army set up camp at Crow Forest, across the Yangtze River from Red Cliff, where the allies were stationed.
With the food supply running short, and the army vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao’s, the allies seemed doomed. Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang had to rely on their combined wisdom to turn the tide of battle. Numerous battles of wits and forces, on land and on water, eventually culminated into the most famous battle in Chinese history, where two thousand ships were burned, and the course of China’s history was changed forever. That was the Battle of Red Cliff.

SYNOPSIS: Two badly wounded samurai arrive at a remote mountain temple. They’re taken in by a kindly host and a woman servant, but one samurai succumbs to his injuries and dies. The caretaker invites the surviving samurai to share a meal and a bottle of wine. He proceeds to tell him about a notorious demon called Tengu who haunts the mountain, dining on the flesh of men. He says Tengu’s real name is Aragami, and then reveals that he is, indeed, Aragami. The only way for the samurai to leave the temple is to destroy Aragami.

REVIEW: " Aragami is absolutely vintage Kitamura. A small cast (of three, unless you count one who dies about two minutes into the film). An unfolding mystery. And a couple of surprise twists which will jolt a surprised laugh out of you.
This and 2LDK were made as part of a friendly competition between directors, and of course being a Kitamura fan I like this one best. It’s odd, though, because not much really happens. There’s talking, eating, fighting, more talking, more fighting. So summing it up like that makes it sound dead dreary, but don’t be deceived. The antagonist, Aragami, functions in the age-old role of storyteller, with a single narrator spinning a tale to chill the blood. You can almost see the flicker of firelight, and hear the mournful wail of wind in the trees, imagining the huddled circle of listeners enrapt by the gradually unfolding mysteries.
My only regret was that the single woman hardly entered into the story. Don’t wish to be cranky and humourless, it’s just that such a tightly-woven story should have incorporated her to some degree, and it seems rather silly to have a cast of three when one has no real role to play. Perhaps they found a spare kimono in the wardrobe department and neither of the men wanted to wear it.
Anyway, all things considered, this is a cracking good yarn, especially for such a limited cast and set. I suspect that may have formed part of the competition: if so, the effect of those constraints in this case was to refine the story like a smelter, until only the pure ore of narrative and action remains. "

REVIEW: " Based on a novel, Chen wrote the screenplay for this “cat and mouse” game which engagingly provides a glimpse for today’s audiences of what it means to feel nationalistic pride in the past. It does evoke that sense of devotion and loyalty, and makes you wonder whether a local film can stir up the same feeling? While this doubt’s answers lies in the vast differences in culture and history, one cannot overlook the impressive production values of this film boasting Feng Xiaogang’s (If You Are The One) name as its executive producer.
The two hour movie manages to bring together some credible names to create an authentic look for the movie. Jake Pollock (Yang Yang)’s lush cinematography enhances the intricate costume design by Tim Yip (Red Cliff). The comfortable pacing of the editing, the well executed soundscape and the entrancing production design will mesmerize viewers from beginning to end.
And thankfully, the storytelling does not disappoint too. The gradual build up of the plot culminates in a finale which may be arguably predictable, but works well for a film of this genre. Credit goes to the spot on cast, all of whom shine in their own character. There is Zhang Hanyu (Assembly) as a long suffering militarist, Huang Xiaoming (Sniper) as the Japanese soldier, Alec Su (L-O-V-E) as a lieutenant and Li Bingbing (The Forbidden Kingdom). Zhang and Huang exudes charisma in their pain inflicted roles, Su creates quite a show with his portrayal of an effeminate officer and Li makes viewers feel her agony with a unique aura of quietness. There is nothing to fault with the acting, as it is with Zhou Xun’s (Perhaps Love) code breaker character. Effortlessly moving through the film with her distinctive allure, she is no doubt one of the greatest movie actresses of our time.
There is something about movies which help people like this reviewer to learn more about history. And despite being a fictional thriller, this finely made production has left this reviewer wondering what it was like to live in a time when you lived for your country. "

Caught up in the dilemma between love and money, Fu-loi finally chooses the fortune road of no return.
It is all about a tough battle for money, a devious triangle of love, and a severe challenge to ethics.

SYNOPSIS: LING Kwong is a 40 year old, self-assured Chief Inspector of Police. He solved numerous difficult cases on his own, has a flawless track record, and is soon to be promoted to Superintendent of Police. Everyone sees him as the future head of the Hong Kong Police Force. Ling has a perfect family – a beautiful, gentle wife, a charming son and a posh lifestyle. In every sense, he is as enviable as he is successful.
His perfect life takes an abrupt turn when he wakes up after fainting in a dilapidated building, on one of his operations. He wakes to discover his short term memory damaged, and is more shocked to find his best colleague killed in the same building – BLOODY HOLES all over his body, mercilessly blood-let by an ELECTRIC HAND DRILL!
Ling’s colleague is the third victim of this series of “bloodletting murders”. Using the most inhuman means, this serial killer makes each victim witness his own slow death, in supreme terror and unimaginable pain! The extreme cruelty of the murders appalls even the most experienced policemen, and after each killing, the murderer simply disappears and leaves no trace at all to the clueless police.
At the height of his life, Ling encounters this most vicious murder throughout Hong Kong’s crime history. He must catch the killer at all costs and to avenge his friend’s death. But as Ling sift through the clues of the murders, he finds that all the evidences are pointing toward himself as the murderer! The deeper he tries to dig into the truth, the more suspicious he becomes!
All this time, Ling’s short term memory continues to desert him. He is losing the last trustworthy evidence – himself. Ling is being pushed to the edge of madness! Is he really the murderer - or not?

REVIEW: " I apologize for calling Roy Chow “Andy Chow” when I posted the trailer, by the way. But I will not apologize for this review.First, the relative pros: Horror fans will like the gore. The movie has some very unsettling and very violent scenes, and it makes for a fairly unpleasant viewing experience, if you like that kind of thing. Aaron Kwok was also OK, although he certainly am vying for getting his picture under “trying too hard” in the dictionary.
Yes, I know that’s not a word in the dictionary.
But never have I seen a film that falls so far off the cliff that it drilled a 50-feet crater into the ground. It tries so hard to find its way out, but it just digs itself deeper and deeper.
On the website of the film, the crew section is called the “perpetrator” section, and it’s certainly right of them to do so: The cinematic crime they have committed earns them the right to be labeled as criminals.
And yet, despite the immensely idiotic twist provided by scriptwriter Christine To Chi-Long, I can’t completely blame her for this mess. As a semi-experienced screenwriter, I know that no movie is ever made from one draft. A movie, especially one as commercial as this, has producers and even the director to have the logic and the correct judgment to know when something on paper will just not work. For co-producer Bill Kong and director Roy Chow to not even consider how moronic its film’s third act is puts them equally at fault for this mess.
Roy Chow was on Ang Lee’s assistant on Lust, Caution (a fact endlessly hyped by Edko’s publicity department, as if it means more than delivering coffee and calling for cars), and Lee is put under the “special thanks” section in the credits. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lee only read about 80 pages of the script, and I definitely won’t be surprised if he ends up calling Chow wanting his name removed from this movie.
I was angry at Transformers 2 for its juvenile humor and its complete waste of US$200 million when that money could’ve gone not blowing things up good. I am angrier at this because even HK$0.1 was even spent in putting this movie on film when there are actually talented people out there who could’ve taken the potential this film had and made something coherent out of it.
This certainly won’t damage the career of seasoned professionals like cinematographer Lee Ping-Bing, editor Cheung Ka-Fai. and composer Shigeru Umebayashi because they did their best with what they had, and I’m sure even they laughed boisterously when they saw what they had to work with. The problem is this won’t even damage the careers of Chow (who’s also the Project Development Director of Edko Films) or To (whose last several produced scripts are all released by Edko).
I can only hope the word-of-mouth will be so bad that it will result in one of the largest second-week drops in Hong Kong cinema history. As the audience was leaving, two HK-ers passed by Sean Tierney, who was sitting next to me, and said to him in English, “so sh*t!”, which prompted Mr. Tierney to not only agree, but to raise them with a “double sh*t”.
I hope logical HK audiences would agree with this assessment, but from reading the Uwant forums, people seem to like the movie simply because they couldn’t guess who the murderer is.
I never thought eating cow dung would be a good idea, but eating it because no one would expect me to eat it doesn’t make me a culinary genius, either.
But if I had to guess what cow dung tastes like, I’d take in a screening of Murderer.
