SYNOPSIS:
Continuing the story from the first film, punk rock singer Osaki Nana (Nakashima Mika) and Komatsu Nana (Ichikawa Yui), sometimes called Hachi, have been sharing an apartment for a while. To cheer up Hachi who has just broken up with her boyfriend, Nana introduces her to Hachi's idol, Takumi (Tamayama Tetsuji), the leader of the band Trapnest. But Nana never expects this will bring Hachi an unstable romance. Meanwhile, Nana's relationship with her ex-boyfriend Ren (Kyo Nobuo), the guitarist of Trapnest, appears as a hot topic on the tabloids.

" Dreadful crud would be one of the kinder ways to summarize Nana 2. For people that have seen the original or follow the manga, you’re going to be disappointed if you expect Nana 2 to be as entertaining as the original. In retrospect, Nana 2 would easily make it up there or should I say down there with Battle Royale 2 and Azumi 2 as one of the most disappointing sequels to come out of Japan.
There’s not really many positive things to say about the film. (Thinking real hard). It was nice to see Mika Nakashima return as Nana Osaki (the black clad Nana), providing a visible link to the original Nana movie. Mika Nakashima’s Nana character is the same gloomy goth-punk chic, with makeup inspired by Marilyn Manson and a physique inspired by Karen Carpenter. And yeah… we’ve only just begun. Other cast members that returned from the original were Tetsuji Tamayama and Tomoki Maruyama. Tetsuji played the self-absorbed guitar player “Takumi” for Trapnest, while Tomoki Maruyama played the drummer “Yasu” for the Black Stones. As with most of the male characters they were all incredibly “cool,” so much so that it was laughable. Tomoki Maruyama as “Yasu” played his character as if he was auditioning for the role of Morpheus in the Matrix, while Tetsuji Tamayama played “Takumi” as a cross between Steve Perry of Aerosmith and Fabio. Yeah it was that bad. And it gets worse…
Sadly, Aoi Miyazaki does not return as the bubbly Nana Osaki. Instead a woefully miscast Yui Ichikawa took over her role in a flavorless performance. While Aoi Miyazaki could make grown men and woman swoon over her natural charm, Yui Ichikawa just didn’t have that “Kawaii” prescence to elicit such a response. Then there’s questionable decision to cast Hongo Kanata in the role of “Shin.” Hong Kanata looked no more than 15 years, while always wearing that annoying punk-rock headset (chain draped from mouth to ear).
This large change in personnel resulted from the filmmakers desire to quickly film the sequel after the original Nana movie became such a huge hit in 2005. Quite a few of the actors had scheduling conflicts and thus were unavailable for the Nana 2.
To put more blame on the filmmakers shoulders, the story behind Nana 2 was actually well written, but burdened with glacial pacing and unappealing actors that elicited no empathy whatsoever. In its most basic form Nana 2 deals with a girl torn between two very different guys, a “nice” guy and “bad” guy. One of the few positives in this movie would have been the unpredictable nature of Nana’s actions and the fact that it doesn’t go down the predictable Hollywood path. There’s also the storyline between the two Nana’s and how they are moving away in different directions. Interesting premise but killed by an unlikeable cast of actors and retarded pacing.
As you can tell by now, Nana 2 was a huge disappointment. The absence of Aoi Miyazaki was profoundly missed, while the actors cast in Nana 2 (besides Mika Nakashima) were unappealing. To make matters worse the film was 130 minutes long and felt even longer. This one was just painfully dull "
