SYNOPSIS:
Min-young moves onto the fifth floor of a new studio apartment with her six-year-old daughter, Joo-hee. She's concerned when her downstairs neighbor, HAN Chang-soo, says that he cannot tolerate the noise above him, even though the two women live tranquilly. Furthermore, she is anxious about other residents' strange behaviors - never mind the mysterious deaths. Min-young hardens herself mentally after the move into the new house, largely because of her daughter's unprecedented odd behavior and continual run-ins with a bizarre woman. Convinced that Joo-hee has fallen sick and perturbed by the mysterious events around the studio apartment, Min-young looks to disclose the truth by herself

" While my scores for Nebeonjjae Cheung aren’t that impressive, I actually did enjoy this movie. What it lacked in an ending—90 minutes of a slow-paced “thriller” building up to a quick, unsatisfying ten-minute climax—it made up for in emotions. ‘Forbidden Floor’ is very much ‘Dark Water’, very much Dead Mother Trying To Communicate Through A Living One. Nebeonjjae Cheung tells the story of a single mother, Min-young who moves into a studio loft with her daughter, Joo-hee seemingly minutes before the start of ghostly activity.
As a viewer, you are told that there is no fourth floor. The floors are numbered as such: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and so on. The magic of this movie is that there is actually a 4th floor; it's simply masked as "5".
Min-young and her daughter step into an elevator during their first trip up to their new apartment (on the 5th floor) and are surprised to find that there is no button for Floor 4. They simply the oddity away and continue unpacking and preparing their new home. Within a few nights, strange things are happening, people are dying, and there’s a young boy who only Joo-hee seems to see running around in the dark.
At one point in the movie, Joo-hee lays on the floor and presses her ear against the hardwood floor. Min-young follows suit, and hears a ghastly scream emulating up through the floorboards. She suspects it’s her neighbor directly below her. Consequently, her neighbor right below her begins hearing the same ruckus from above him and assumes its Min-young and her rowdy daughter. The idea that both apartments can hear noises originating apparently from nowhere is a very creepy, very nice addition to the story.
I really tried to like Min-young, but her parenting skills and the neglect she showed towards Joo-hee didn’t allow me to. No mother should leave their child in the car parked outside on a busy street. No mother should close the door behind her and let her child walk around the apartment complex hallway by herself. And no mother should leave her six-year-old child home alone while she’s out at an employee dinner drinking with co-workers. Min-young wasn’t particularly courageous or useful. And ultimately, she failed. She took shit from her neighbors and she seemed to make the most awful decisions a mother could make.
I had a very hard time appreciating the ending. While there was a twist, it didn’t seem rewarding enough. It doesn’t make you cover your mouth and gasp, or give you that unsettling paranoia that most twists give a viewer. The very last scene shows Min-young and Joo-hee driving away from their apartment complex, having moved out after the final death of the movie. You see Joo-hee looking up at the superintendent staring out at her from their now empty apartment, then you see the long haired, blood-shot eyed, pale ghost attack him from behind. You’re left feeling as though the story hasn’t ended, and not in a Sequel-Coming-Soon sort of way.
This movie was based off a grudge and a vengeful spirit of a mother who’s son was murdered in front of her face and who too was murdered in cold blood. So, if you think you’ve seen this plot many times before, you’re right, you have. And probably done better too. "
