SYNOPSIS:
Hardboiled, hard-drinking, and hard-hitting female detective Yukihira Natsumi (Shinohara Ryoko) has the best record in the police force, but it has come at a cost. Her fiercely independent personality and penchant to not go by the books has alienated her from colleagues, while her dedication, or perhaps obsession, with work has already cost her a marriage and custody of her eight-year-old daughter. Natsumi has no time for apologies and misgivings though when there is crime to be fought. She is forced to reconsider everything she knows, however, when terrorists take over the hospital her daughter is being treated at. How far will she go to save her daughter?

" The screenplay by TV series scribe Sato Shimako (Eko Eko Azaraku -Wizard of Darkness) borrows elements liberally from Michael Bay’s “The Rock” but doesn’t give us much to get excited about. The story is rife with tired genre clichés, sappy dialog and an almost too painfully contrived plot.
I was particularly surprised by series director Kobayashi Yoshinori’s almost anemic sense of storytelling which was in stark contrast to the TV series. The staged gun play and fight scenes were done in the most boring of fashion and were almost embarrassing in their subdued display. I would expect this type of stuff from TV but not a big budget movie.
Shinohara Ryoko (singer/actress who is best known for her various J-Dorama roles as well as for her music including the Komuro Tetsuya produced theme song in “Streetfighter II: The Animation) is definitely the big draw here as beautiful detective Yukihira and the producers know and exploit it. There is no shortage of the stunning Shinohara in wet blouse, gun in hand and pouty expression mugging for attention. She is not a physical action star like Shihomi Etsuko, Mizuno Miki or Kaji Meiko but brings with her a raw sexual presence and allure that is definitely inviting. She plays her character tough and with an edgy quirk that is unique for a Japanese heroine.
The saving grace for the film however is Eguchi Yosuke. While mainly known for his likable TV J-Dorama roles, he plays a decidedly different character here who we can’t really figure out or pin down. Is he in league with the villains or is he on Yukihira’s side. His role is the most interesting aspect of the movie and I wish that had been played up more.
Shiina Kibei’s Goutou had the potential to be as good of a character as Ed Harris’ General Hummel character in “The Rock” but wasn’t given much chance to shine as was Hamada Mari’s treacherous character.
The supporting cast also do what they can in limited roles such as Terajima Susumu (Hula Girls, Brother, Koroshi No Ichi), Abe Sadao (Yokai Daisensou), Kato Rosa (Cheerful Gang Takes The World) and Osugi Ren (Exte, Audition).
I definitely expected more given that the TV series was so much more better with it’s sombre tone and darker elements but realize that the movie’s 112 minute limitation made it difficult to neatly wrap up every plot detail, albeit it did leave many an irritating question unanswered.
While I wasn’t expecting something as good as other deka movies like “Abunai Deka”, “Sukeban Deka” or “Odoru Daisosasen”, I certainly wasn’t expecting the movie to disappoint so much.
Perhaps it is ...unfair (excuse the pun) to expect so much from this movie. "
